Windows 7 trumps Windows XP for Pole Position – Windows 8 Cloudy Future

This just in, my dear readers! Windows 7 is now the No. 1 Operating System for WinTel (Windows and Intel) machines worldwide. This after bearing the dominance of the Windows XP OS, which has held that position for the last ten (10) years, a testament ironically more to the power of software piracy than the quality of the OS! Personally I find this all surprising, as it was only a six (6) months ago that Windows XP was King of the Hill, according to the Statistics of Consumer Report in April 2011AD the US of A. But statistics never lie and analyst and Web Statistician StatCounter handy graphic shows when the break even point occurred between the months of October 2010AD to September 2011AD. For those with a penchant for words, here is the October 2011AD stats rap sheet: Windows 7 ...

IE10 to be the first stake in Microsoft Vista’s coffin

A lot of people received a not so welcomed surprise (myself included) when they realized that the recently released Internet Explorer 9 was not compatible with Windows XP (yes I still have Windows XP installed at home). Internet Explorer 10 is in development and Microsoft has announced that Windows Vista will not be supported. Microsoft has been aggressively promoting the idea that a browser is only as good as the operating system it runs on, and that by extension, browsers that run on older OSes are sub-standard. “Windows Vista customers have a great browsing experience with IE9,” says Microsoft in a statement, “but in building IE10 we are focused on continuing to drive the kind of innovation that only happens when you take advantage of the ongoing improvements in modern operating...

Seagate GoFlex Slim – the Anorexic External Hard Drive

The GoFlex Slim is being touted by Seagate as the "World's Slimmiest" hard drive. The 320 GB solid state external hard drive measures in at 4.91- x 3.07- x 0.35-inches and weighs only 0.4 pounds. Slimness it's not the only feature the GoFlex Slim boasts as it's USB 3.0 connectivity combined with the 7200RPM drive makes it quite the speedster - think of it as the Porsche Cayman of the hard drive world. The GoFlex Slim costs US$99.99 and is now available at most stores and includes backup software, encryption and syncing technology that is a must for external drives. It is compatible with Windows and Mac computers and as expected is ultra portable. It's interesting to see how the hard drive wars used to be fought on the capacity front but has now switched to who is the slimmest. One thin...

Jamaica’s Lost Innovators – An untapped Source of Economic Prosperity

The late American Economist and Professor at the Harvard Business School, Theodore Levitt is quoted as saying that “Just as energy is the basis of life itself, and ideas the source of innovation, so is innovation the vital spark of all human change, improvement and progress.” Professor Michael E. Porter, author of "The Competitive Advantage of Nations," speaking on the topic of Innovation is noted as saying that “Innovation is the central issue in economic prosperity.” Examples of Jamaican Innovation I remember hearing about a young Jamaican who made a one man helicopter out of scrap metal and stuff he found lying around places like junk yards. The Chopper was opened using a magnetic strip similar to what's on credit cards. In addition to this, it had an on board computer along with a ...

Nokia’s shift to Microsoft

It is one of the biggest changes ever made in smartphone history and certainly the biggest change ever made by Nokia. This change has brought countless criticisms with many critics going as far as saying that this was all a move by the CEO to help out his former employer's new but ailing platform. Yes, I am talking about Nokia's dumping of its strategy with Symbian, Qt, Meego, Ovi and just about everything it have brought to the table so far. It is a monumental change, a massive transition that will either make or break Nokia, a truly once in a lifetime change. How did it reach this far? My stance from the start is one of disappointment and confusion at Nokia's strategy. My opinion is that Nokia can not be trusted and anything they say cannot be followed. I can imagine how the thousa...
