How to expand and secure your Wi-Fi Network with Power-Line Adaptors

If you’ve got Broadband Internet from FLOW of LIME, you probably may have noticed that you can’t get Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11n) everywhere in the house. Some part of your house may have thicker walls with more metallic structures. As such, metal i.e. steel, zinc nails, iron grills attenuate radio waves and thereby shorten the 100m range of most Routers. This is both Good and Bad: makes it harder for hackers to access your Wi-Fi Network but reduces your home Wi-Fi Network to literally sitting beside the supposedly 100m range Router. So what can you do, especially a report published on Wednesday April 17th 2013 by Independent Security Evaluators states that the top Wi-Fi Routers on the market are easily hackable due to security holes in the firmware, which many don’t make easy to regularly upda...

How to access any WEP or WPA/WPA2 Wi-Fi Network that has a password

I love the Internet and I especially love Google. Free knowledge to occupy the interstices of your free time either learning something new, watching and downloading Youtube Videos, Social Networking, designing Video Games or even making money as surmised in Digital JAM 2.0 introduces Freelancer.com and MobileWorks to Jamaica as the GOJ readies Flexi-work Legislation. And I have even more reasons to love it, as my little community of Milk River has finally been updated to the status of a place that has access to this vital Telecom Service. Digicel has now made their WiMaX Services, commercial known as Digicel Broadband Internet, available in Milk River. That means in a few months time, those people who brought a Digicel CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) will eventually be creating a lot of...

Barbados on the path to free island-wide Wi-Fi coverage

The Barbados Entrepreneurship Foundation in association with the Government of Barbados, the private sector and telecommunications companies set out on a project last year to completely cover the island nation with 100% free Wi-Fi by Novermber 11th, 2011 (11.11.11). The target date has come and gone and although 100% coverage has not been achieved as planed 60% of Bardados now has access to free Wi-Fi. CEO of the Barbados Entrepreneurship Foundation, Damian McKinney stated that: “the project is fundamental to propelling Barbados to the center of global business with the incremental proliferation of free Wi-fi hotspots, which in turn will enable new business opportunities and innovations.” He also highlighted that while Barbados enjoys a literacy rate of an estimated 99.7%, it ...

MiFi Hits Cayman thanks to Digicel and LIME

With devices getting smaller and more internet ready, internet access on the go has been an issue here in the Cayman. Thankfully, Mobile ISP providers Digicel and LIME have heard the call and have both addressed the issue. Their answer was MiFi. MiFi (A clever acronym for Mobile Wifi) offers internet connectivity over the air for up to 5 wifi enabled devices at a time. So you can have your iPad, iPhone, Netbook, Kindle, iPod and soon to own PSVita all connected to the internet wirelessly via your very own wifi hotspot. Both companies have broth two different Mifi devices to the table, Digicel with the WiMAX Pocket Modem MF250 and the Huawei E5830s from LIME. Both are utraportable and provide internet via the companies separate yet similarly named 4G network. Key Features: Featur...

Chromebooks get Secure Wi-Fi, VPN and other updates

The Cloud based Chrome OS is aimed at individuals and businesses wishing to free themselves from the high upkeep costs of having Windows or Mac based machines. Everything done in Chrome OS is saved in the clouds and allows users to access their information from anywhere there is an internet connection. Google recently rolled out the first wave of "Chromebooks" - fast, secure and simple laptop computers that have experienced mixed success. Chromebooks have recently been updated to have Secure WiFi (802.1X) and Virtual Private Network (VPN) support as well as the  ability to access virtualized versions of their desktop applications. One of the best things about Chromebooks is that they improve over time with frequent automatic updates. Over the last few months we’ve gotten great fe...

Apple iPad

After months of rumors and speculation about a pending new device to be released by Apple Inc on January 27th the official iPad tablet computer was revealed. Some call it nothing more than a bigger iPod touch or iPhone, some think it will revolutionize mobile personal computing, some can't get over making fun of the name. While I personally think the person who signed off on the name of this product should be shot (even if it is Steve Jobs), I'm willing to look beyond the awkward name and look at the device itself and see what it offers it's users. Without a doubt it offers a lot and is a marvelous piece of technology but frankly that still doesn't make it more than a bigger more powerful iPod/iPhone. (more…)
