JPS Using Open Source Tools To Reduce Non-Technical Loss

Source pexels.com   Internationally, Jamaica is well known for both sports, culture and the high cost of electricity; even Solomon Island is worried about their #1 spot. The high cost of electricity in combination with the other economic factors has resulted in an increase in the number of theft. It has been reported that theft by some residents and large co-operations are impacting the sole power provider, JPS. To tackle this problem, JPS partnered with World Bank, A data science firm (The Impact Lab), and Energy Sector Management Assistance. But that is the boring stuff and you can read more about that here. The interesting part is that they are using Machine Learning and Open Source tools to predict and identify perpetrators. This is a game-changer when compared to thei...

How Can We Help The Open Data Initiative?

As a country, we are very good at starting projects, but the challenge is in the maintenance phase. Are we under a spell? We tend to put little effort in maintaining projects for one reason or another. Take for example the JUTC bus park downtown or the multipurpose stadium. I'm seeking your help as we can't let the Open Data Initiative suffer the same faith. Jamaica has made some significant strides in getting the project off the ground. We are the first in a total of five (5) Caribbean countries to get the ball rolling. The purpose of this article is to reignite the debate around this critical piece of legislation and to encourage public debate.   Mic check. SELA eSTEMos Juntos Celebrates Diversity in Education and Technology in Latin America

Schools can be a melting pot for cultures and languages—many are multicultural havens where languages, practices, and beliefs come together and build a more unified world. Schools are able to use education and tolerance as a way to strengthen their cultural identities and promote inclusion through interaction. In the 21st century we have the means to increase our interactions and improve the quality of our communications with the use of technology. Technology has heralded an age in which everyone has access to education. It doesn’t matter what your nationality is, you still have the ability to learn—whether you’re a student learning something new or a teacher trying to improve the quality of the classes they teach.   Technology helps to close gaps in learning and r...

Disruptive Technology

With this series I don't set out to be the bearer of novel solutions or brilliant ideas but just to spark conversations and thinking that could potentially lead to solutions, ideas and ways forward to potentially get these issues addressed. We have to be Progressive and Adaptive vs Conservative and Responsive. In a society where mechanical/lack of innovative ways are looked for in solving basic issues, we have to start some discourse among the population which then will permeate through the economy, organizations or the country. The Apple’s or Google’s of this world are continuing to push the edges of what is reality and what we deemed as fiction. Things 5 - 10 years ago which we would laugh at as fiction or fairy tail has in some way has become reality. Drones “Artificial...

Tertiary Institutions in Jamaica should use more Open Source

Hi, welcome to another post in the series where I'm preaching the gospel of Open Source Software (OSS) to my fellow Jamaicans and today the focus is on Tertiary education. Tertiary institutions across the globe have been utilising Open Source to drive research and innovation. I believe that our local tertiary institutions should follow suit and become even more involved in this global shift in education, research and development.   In this post, we will be talking about the ways in which local universities may use OSS to operate more efficiently. Open Source has as unique advantage in offering benefits to not only the institution but also to the students and other relevant stakeholders. From my perspective these benefits based on three important pillars of open source: cost ...

SMBE – Running on Open Source Software

Welcome to another post in the series, where I'll be expressing my views on open source technology and the benefits to Jamaica. This is the second write-up and I'll be showing how open source software benefits the business sector. If you missed the first post please feel free to catch up. The economics and social benefits derived from the application of open source technology in the Small and Medium Business Enterprise (SMBE) has been tremendous. The sector has seen an upward trend in the rate of adoption for open source technology and it is expected to continue growing in the coming years. This sharp upswing is not a result of open source offering a more cost-effective option but also stability, security and agility to the industry. Yes, open source has been a force for change on a...

SmartTerm Takes up Challenge to Streamline Caribbean Education Process

Upon being appointed the Minister of Education of Jamaica, Senator Ruel Reid asserted that parents needed to be more involved in the education and development of their children--in order for teachers to make a bigger impact in the classroom-- and that education begins in the home. In order for this to be done, there are a number of strategies that need to be employed, but one thing is still missing: a system that brings it all together. SmartTerm is that system. SmartTerm is a cohesive web and mobile school and learning management system that connects administration, teachers, students and parents. SmartTerm streamlines schools’ academic and administrative processes, including subject management, financial management, and personnel management, etc. According to a survey conducted by ...

How Chinese White Space Network possible in Jamaica by Independence Day

Looks like the Summer of 2016 might be the Summer that a new Telecom Provider comes to Jamaica. And possibly a Celestial of the Telecom World; China Telecom or China Mobile. So says Finance Minister Audley Shaw during a Standing Finance Committee of Parliament on Tuesday May 3rd 2016 where he spoke on behalf of the Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Dr Andrew Wheatley, who was abroad on business. The previous Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Phillip Paulwell in January 2016 had mentioned such a Third Telecom Provider vying for a Cellular license. More interestingly, Finance Minister Audley Shaw says they've been in Jamaica for the past two (2) years offering their services via provisional approval, effectively to do testing of their serv...
