CaribFlix TV and Vueture Entertainment – Rise of the Caribbean Streamers

Streaming of Jamaican and Caribbean content is now a reality in Jamaica. Two streaming platforms, CaribFlix TV and Vueture Entertainment, are aiming to make that possible. The Jamaican entrepreneurs that are making these streaming dreams reality know what they are up against. The big heavyweights in the streaming networks world are lready making inroads into Jamaica: Netflix YouTube TV Hulu Amazon Prime Video Still, it is possible to carve out a niche, especially, as most of the content coming from those top streamers is heavily Americanized. Still, we Jamaicans tend to like anything that is foreign, only subverting to Jamaican made products if it is value for money and has some nostalgic sentiment that reverberates with a large number of the masses. So who e...

Youtube Gaming coming this summer

In an unexpected move we see YouTube entering the long non-contested market of online game streaming. YouTube is getting more serious about gaming and everyone else should too. This summer, the video streaming service will launch YouTube Gaming, a new app and website dedicated to video game content: Let's Plays, livestreams, speedruns and more. After providing a preview of their 60fps streaming service just last month, YouTube has officially announced today the next step in their broadcasting expansion. This comes as a surprise to some people but industry veterans know the history behind all these happenings. Some may even remember the first attempt Google made to get into providing a streaming service last year around May when they were in talks to buy Twitch. Sadly or gladly depending on...

Amazon to Acquire Twitch

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Twitch Interactive, Inc., the leading live video platform for gamers. In July, more than 55 million unique visitors viewed more than 15 billion minutes of content on Twitch produced by more than 1 million broadcasters, including individual gamers, pro players, publishers, developers, media outlets, conventions and stadium-filling esports organizations. “Broadcasting and watching gameplay is a global phenomenon and Twitch has built a platform that brings together tens of millions of people who watch billions of minutes of games each month – from The International, to breaking the world record for Mario, to gaming conferences like E3. And, amazingly, Twitch is only three years old,” said Jeff Bezos...

Apple iOS 8 may free Apple iTunes Radio on Google Play Store

Alarm Bells must be ringing at 1 Infinite Loop Drive at Cupertino, California blaring “Red Alert” as I type this. Reason being is that suddenly, there has been a drop in Music downloads from Apple iTunes, as now, more than ever, Americans have rediscovered Radio. Or to be more precise, Streaming Radio as explained in The Music Industry and the Cloud – Streaming Radio Nirvana. To this end, Apple is making a bold decision that mimics the decision taken by Blackberry with regards to BBM (BlackBerry Messenger) as I’d pointed out in Free Blackberry Messenger App coming to Android and iOS; they are planning to let Apple iTunes Radio free as a standalone App on Apple iOS when they roll out Apple iOS 8. They also plans to make Apple iTunes Radio a service that can be downloaded on any smartpho...

Google Play Movies expands to Jamaica, Trinidad and 10+ more Countries

Many countries and regions of the world especially the Caribbean is often region-locked from many online services available to larger more affluent countries. Also, some of the few times countries like Jamaica, Trinidad and Antigua and Barbuda are included we are stuck with watered down selections (Netflix) or grouped together with Latin America because apparently all of the Caribbean speaks Spanish. A small change has happened today with the news that Google has expanded its Google Play Movie service to 27 new countries. On that list we'll now find Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda and even our central American neighbors Belize. Good news in my eyes and although the selection of movie titles on Google's service is paltry I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and ...

Netflix uses Torrenting Trends to pick popular Content

“Certainly there's some torrenting that goes on, and that's true around the world, but some of that just creates the demand. Netflix is so much easier than torrenting. You don't have to deal with files, you don't have to download them and move them around. You just click and watch” Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in an interview with Netherlands Tech site Tweakers Netflix is the very popular IPTV Streaming website that’s got viewership that 's now global, thanks to launching not only in Latin America but most recently in the Netherlands. What’s not to love at US$8.99 for unlimited monthly streaming? Some of my stablemates here at Geezam have not-so-nice words to mince about the Netflix streaming here in the Caribbean as per Ramano’s article Is Netflix a Netjoke? With LIME TV yet to laun...

Google Chromecast – Web Videos on your TV for USD $35

Recently Google introduced the Chromecast - a $35 HDMI dongle that sends online videos from your phone, tablet or Chrome browser to your HDTV. This 2 inch dongle connects to your HDTV via a HDMI port and is powered either by the port itself (if your TV supports it) or a micro-USB cable. After connecting it to your TV there is a fast and simple set up process in which you give the device a name e.g., "Living Room TV". That's it, as there is no user interfaces to learn as it is controlled by the device that sent the video i.e. your Android tablet or iPad. You open the video you want to watch e.g., a YouTube video, and their will be a "Cast" button in the UI, select it and then select "Living Room TV". The video is then sent to your TV.  Now, it should be noted that this idea is nothing n...
