Google Play Store Apps with AdWare threat to Android Security

“When you install Durak, it seems to be a completely normal and well working gaming app. This was the same for the other apps. This impression remains until you reboot your device and wait for a couple of days. After a week, you might start to feel there is something wrong with your device. Some of the apps wait up to 30 days until they show their true colors.”  Avast's malware analyst Filip Chytry commenting on the Avast blog about the  Aware found in three (3) Apps on the Google Play Store People in Google Android land totin' Smartphone!! Arrival of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 – a Selfie-Themed Affair

Yep. That title just about sums up what happened on Friday October 24th 2014. On that clear cloud day I was invited to see the opening of the Samsung Experience Store to welcome the first customers who would lay eyes on the Samsung product I’d written about days before. It’s one week after the Launch of the products, a Spy-caper of an affair for which I’d penned my simple ditty of an article Samsung Launches quartet of Note-worthy Products to Tab into the Gear S Alpha in all Jamaicans. The Main headliners of their opening act are: US$1089 (JA$122,000) Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Samsung Galaxy Gear S smartwatch The other two (2) apparently supporting actors are actually more likely to wow the crowd: US$526 (JA$59,000) Samsung Galaxy S Tab 8.4” Tablet US$652 (JA$73,000) Samsu...

Google Music goes live but only for the United States

As expected, today Google detailed it's digital music store offering ingeniously named "Google Music". Google music is not new as it had existed in beta form since the Google I/O in May but it has dropped the beta moniker and now is officially live but only to customer in the United States. I am not sure what the backroom dealings entailed to get record labels and artists to allow Google to sell their music but being only available in the US is already a BIG mistake in my eyes. It is definitely playing catch-up with the digital music behemoth known as iTunes and the giant known as the Amazon Music Store and  having only limited availability really hurts it's potential especially seeing that Google is baked into the minds of many as a global brand. But enough of my whining, services like th...

Smartphones and Apps – Freemium Games are No. 1

It seems that when it comes to Apps, the number one App is still Games, according to recent stats posted Thursday July 7th 2011AD by Analyst Nielsen. In fact, to give a bit of perspective, the most popular Apps categories are in fact: Games Weather Social Networking Maps, Navigation and Search Let me throw some clothes on those nubile facts: 93% buy Games 87% buy Entertainment App 84% buy both a Productivity App and a Map, Navigation or Search App Food and News Apps also popped up in the study, an indicator that gamers, be they Console or Mobile, gotta eat too! But it is the average time spent on these Games that is shocking: Mobile Games play 7.8 hours per month! Broken down in terms of OS: iPhone users play 14.7 hours each month Android users play 9....

Defying The Apple Gods: Jamaica and The App Store

Remember that promise I made to you about an extensive post on Apple's App Store and what its like living in Jamaica? Bah, me neither. Can I benefit from the App Store? There was an era some time ago where any human being that existed outside of the United States was inadvertently insulted by  Uncle Steve and his army of bandits, that has since changed--of course. From Argentina right back to countries like Uganda and Senegal, there should be a selection for just about anyone. The tricky part boils down to the signing up part and gaining access to region locked apps. Signing Up In my last post, LIME and the iPhone, I spoke about the downfalls of selecting the country you actually live in as it relates to Apple and the App Store, in that, specific applications would no longer be ac...

Android Market gets new web-based revamp

The Android team today took the wraps off a brand new and much needed web-based market for android applications. Announced at a special press conference to showcase the tablet-friendly version of Android code named "Honeycomb" the Market upgrade might just have overshadowed all other announcements. Market announcement overdue Previously the android app store was only available on handsets (and most recently tablets) running the OS, but now all the contents of the Android market can be viewed on any computer and coupled with a slew of new features this might be the missing peice of the Android puzzle although many might argue that this is at least a year too late. Web-based Android Market features Some of the features of the new web-based Android Market include: the ab...
