Number portability now a reality in Jamaica

After multiple delays due a various disagreements the Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Phillip Paulwell announced that effective 12:01 am, Monday June 21st 2015 number portability is a reality in Jamaica. Number portability is now possible for individuals and businesses between the various telecommunications companies in Jamaica for fixed line and mobile phone customers. A company based in the Netherlands Porting Access BV, oversea and manage the number portability central reference database using an automated central order handling system. Digicel and LIME identified by Netflix’s ISP Index as the Slowest in the Caribbean

Think Jamaicans are feisty about their slow Broadband Internet? They may now have a reason after it was revealed that Digicel has the slowest Broadband in the Caribbean. So says Netflix in their Netflix's ISP Index for the month of December 2014, which ranked all the Caribbean ISP in terms of their ability to Stream Netflix Video. The Rankings are as thus: 3.53Mbps for Mexico's Totalplay 2.37Mbps for Flow 1.38Mbps for LIME 0.69Mbps for Digicel Broadband Digicel is ranked by Netflix as the slowest in the Caribbean, with Mexico’s Totalplay being the fastest, besting even ISPs in US and Canada. Cable & Wireless Communications acquires Columbus International Inc

The Board of Cable & Wireless Communications Plc ("CWC" or the "Company") today announces that it has agreed terms to acquire Columbus International Inc ("Columbus") for consideration of approximately USD1.85bn (for 100 per cent. of the equity). In addition, CWC will assume Columbus’ existing net debt as part of the Acquisition, which was USD1.17bn as at 30 June 2014. Regional economies are set to receive a big boost as CWC, LIME's parent company, mobilizes 'Project Marlin' - its US$1.05b investment-led strategy. This major network upgrade investment of US$1.05b represents a 30% or a US$250m CAPEX increase over the previous year. By this increased spend on network upgrade, LIME brings the latest telecoms technology - island-wide Superfast 4G and 4G LTE plus Superfast fibre optic Broadband to its Caribbean markets.
