Women-led coding and design non-profit based in Chicago expands their free coding camps to girls in Kingston, Jamaica

Brave Initiatives, a Chicago-based nonprofit that offers free coding, design and leadership camps in the U.S. for girls, announced today that it will expand the program to Jamaica with the first weeklong camp starting in Kingston on August 14, 2017. Anna Bethune, a native of Kingston and one of three co-founders at Brave Initiatives, said the Jamaica expansion is part of a global initiative to educate high school girls about the role technology plays in providing solutions to important social issues. Brave Initiatives also focuses on diversifying the fields of computer science and technology, which are traditionally male-dominated. “The needs in Jamaica are very different than they are in the U.S.,” said Bethune, highlighting the importance of the hosting the free camps and workshops...

eSports: Get Out Of Control At InControl

Your friendly neighborhood gamer Zalgo Cometh here again with some eSports news. There have been a few local eSports tournaments in Jamaica since the start of 2016. A couple that can be mentioned are the Flow eGames Feva FIFA 16 tournament and Clan Pro Circuit's Street Fighter V Invitational. Let's not forget some of the local tournaments held around the Island. Despite those tournaments, there hasn't been a break out major tournament since the Cyberbox C.E.L Games in 2015. All of that changed however in May of 2016 as Billy Zee hosted his 3rd installment of the Incontrol eSports series. The event played host to three different genres of games; sports, first person shooters (FPS) and fighting games. The Incontrol Triple Play eSports event had FIFA 16, Call of Duty Black Ops 3, Stree...

How to recover Data from your Damaged Thumb Drive or ZIP Archive

On Monday July 15th 2013 at 4am, the day of the Ban on Smoking in Public Places in Jamaica, the unthinkable happened. My Thumb drive, on which I’ve archived all my Geezam Blog articles and those for my blog My Thoughts on Technology and Jamaica, crashed. Suffice to say I literally blew my top and panicked a bit as it seemed the unthinkable, Murphy’s Law Style, had happened. My 4GB Kingston Thumb was not only inaccessible but was requesting that I format the 4GB Kingston Thumb Drive labeled “STARFIRE” (I’m a big Teen Titans Fan). What the….. So, eh. It seems the Computer Gods have decided to “Tes me spirit” eh, Bruce Lee Style. The Computer Gods have taken away that which belongs to me and see how long I’d last before I curse God to his face, like Job in the Bible. Like Job, however, I ki...

LIME Jamaica launches Blackberry Z10 at glitzy event in Kingston

Blackberry is undergoing many changes in 2013. It started the in January with the reveal of the new Blackberry 10 mobile operating system and its two new flagship devices the BlackBerry Q10 - which features a physical QWERTY keyboard and the iconic BlackBerry look and the BlackBerry Z10 - which features the more modern brick design that has been more popular lately. It didn't take long for the Blackberry Z10 to arrive in Jamaica, as after weeks of teasers it was launched by LIME  last night at a glitzy event on Oxford Road in Kingston. The entire event was streamed online via the Lime Jamaica Facebook page and a lucky fan won their very own Blackberry Z10 smartphone. Two guests at the event were also lucky enough to win Z10s of their own. Jamaica is still very much "Blackberry country"...
