New Player set to enter Jamaica’s Mobile Telecommunications market

Jamaica currently has two players in the mobile telecommunications services market. However the Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Phillip Paulwell has revealed that an application is now before Cabinet for the granting of a new licence. This was revealed at the opening of the Energy Services Company (ESCO) on Wednesday January 27th 201 at the Jamaica Conference at the Knutsford Court Hotel in New Kingston. More to follow... Increase in Flow Jamaica Internet rates on February 1 2016

Flow customers in Jamaica should expect to pay more for their internet services come February 1, 2016. Flow has announced increases in their rates they deem necessary at this time in order to improve their internet infrastructure and provide customers with speeds they demand. Unsurprisingly customers are not pleased and question the "freeness" of the recently revealed upgrades and speed increases announced just in time for Christmas. The rates that become effective on February1, 2016 along with present rates and increases can be seen in the chart below.

After multiple delays due a various disagreements the Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Phillip Paulwell announced that effective 12:01 am, Monday June 21st 2015 number portability is a reality in Jamaica. Number portability is now possible for individuals and businesses between the various telecommunications companies in Jamaica for fixed line and mobile phone customers. A company based in the Netherlands Porting Access BV, oversea and manage the number portability central reference database using an automated central order handling system. The Board of Cable & Wireless Communications Plc ("CWC" or the "Company") today announces that it has agreed terms to acquire Columbus International Inc ("Columbus") for consideration of approximately USD1.85bn (for 100 per cent. of the equity).
