New Player set to enter Jamaica’s Mobile Telecommunications market

Jamaica currently has two players in the mobile telecommunications services market. However the Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining, Phillip Paulwell has revealed that an application is now before Cabinet for the granting of a new licence. This was revealed at the opening of the Energy Services Company (ESCO) on Wednesday January 27th 201 at the Jamaica Conference at the Knutsford Court Hotel in New Kingston. More to follow... Digicel’s Impersonal Customer Care

A few months back I noticed a big change in the Customer Care service provided to you when you call 120 from a Digicel phone. There is currently no easy way to get access to a customer care representative and instead you have to navigate through a maze of menus just to find what you want. at this time the vast menus, which can take upwards of 5 to 6 minutes to navigate hinders the users ability to get any issues they are having resolved and I guess that many have given up frustrated and exasperated beyond endurance. The difficulty in reaching a human operator has reduced the sort of personal feel that many of us have grown accustomed to with Digicel over the years and serve to cement those who believe the company, now large, is rapidly becoming disconnected from the people who had put it w...

LIME Jamaica slashes mobile calling rates

Jamaica's leading telecommunications company, LIME, announces historic mobile rates effective tomorrow, June 15 2012 that will revolutionise the Jamaican mobile market. At a press conference hosted at its Kingston headquarters yesterday, Garry Sinclair, Managing Director revealed the new TALK EZ plan with an unprecedented one rate $2.99 per minute charge for on-net prepaid and international calls to the USA, Canada & UK landlines. Consumers can opt in to the new TALK EZ plan by dialling *123*1# and pressing send. "This is truly ground-breaking for the entire industry. It is also a seminal moment in our nation's history with consumers as the biggest winners. LIME Jamaica is leading the charge in making voice calls cost significantly less," Sinclair highlighted. "TALK EZ's "one-rate" ...

How to set up an International Calling Plan for Digicel or LIME Prepaid and Postpaid

Ever since the JA$8.99 Flat Rate Calling Plan hit Prime Time, interest in my article Digicel Introduces One Rate Calling for $8.99 in Jamaica has shot through the roof. Of particular interest to readers is the reasoning behind the non-inclusion of the Gimme 5 International Calling, where you make a five (5) minute call and get the next twenty five (25) Minutes free. The rational is rather obvious: Digicel is trying to phase out Free International Calling via Gimme 5. This as giving subscribers the option to make a free twenty five (25) minute call represents a considerable amount of lost revenue, which the Flat Rate Calling Plan, if successfully accepted by the majority of Jamaicans, would fix. Digicel is also set to lose considerable revenue from Cross Network Calls, based on the handy ...

How to set up and manage your Digicel InTunes Account

Digicel InTunes is possibly one of the most innovative yet underappreciated new products to come out of Digicel. It provides a service some may say is unnecessary yet from a business standpoint has great potential as a significant source of Revenue in Voice Telecoms, as it taps into Jamaica’s love affair with music. Digicel InTunes is basically a 30-day subscription service that allows the subscriber to replace the standard ringback tone with a song of their choice. At first this may seem to be a pointless, as if you don’t get through to the person, then you’ll get Voicemail, upon which you the subscriber can record a song. But just as the having a Blackberry puts you into the “IN” crowd; a similar sentiment is expressed with your Digicel InTunes Account, as it personalizes your Mobi...

Digicel Introduces One Rate Calling for $8.99 in Jamaica

Digicel shocked the Living Daylights out of virtually everyone when they announced on Friday March 2nd 2012AD that they would be introducing a significantly lowered Cross Network Calling Rate of JA$8.99 for Prepaid Callers, which Digicel refers to as DigiFlex. Yes, folks, there is indeed news more shocking than Digicel’s initially announcement that they were going to shut down the CLARO Network as per my article “CLARO’s Freeness ends 5th January 2012 – Digicel’s Bigger, Better with Data and Cloud”. Believe it or not! Curiously enough, the rate cut is not completely voluntary, as once you activate it using the USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Service Data) code of *155#, you have thirty (30) days to kick the tyres about a bit using the new Flat Rate of JA$8.99 before you officially hit ...
