Tech tutorials, howtos and walkthroughs

RIM (Research in Motion) had launched their answer to the Apple iPad in the US of A earlier in April 2011AD – to rather lukewarm sales. For those of you who love gadgets and specs, my colleague Kelroy’s article The Blackberry Playbook has arrived should provide you with no end of delight! Pushing specs aside, the PlayBook’s pricing and performance issues bedevil RIM’s Tablet, with RIM on May 13th 2011AD having to recall one thousand (1000) of them due to a glitch in the QNX OS that these 7”-inchers run their laps in pursuit of Apple’s perfection.

The PlayBook Tablet sans contract and no 3G or 4G support, I am left wondering: RIM, seriously?

RIM is now struggling worldwide against the might and muscle of Google Android OS on ultra-cheap smartphones and the Apple iPhone, which on 14th June 2011AD, went unlocked in the US of A.

Last week Thursday, June 16th 2011AD, CNET Reporter Erica Ogg reports that the RIM PlayBook has been given the “L” sign by Telecom Operator O2 in the UK (United Kingdom), who have refused to carry the Tablet citing quote “unfortunately there are some issues with the end to end customer experience”.

This as tethering via slow Bluetooth and the still bothersome lack of support for a Third-Party Brower experience as well as those tiny volume controls would make even a Tablet-philic individual such as myself pass up the PlayBook for the Apple iPad!

Not to mention poor battery life and the lack of a docking cradle option to make it into a 7” screen Netbook (who still has one those extinct Jurassic gadgets anyway?), a necessary part of the transition to Tablets as my article Are we witnessing Laptop and PC Extinction? opines.

Engadget, CNET Reporter Erica Ogg’s quoted source, allegedly received this information in an email sent out to users that purportedly came from O2.

Albeit I dislike cribbing the bigger blogs networks, I am nonetheless awed at the way in which this occurred with such suddenness and on the heels of RIM’s soon to be announced Second Quarter Performance Results.

Good to note that the RIM Playbook has launched in sixteen (16) other countries inclusive of the U.K being among of the unlucky guinea pigs.

Fortunately, Jamaica will be on the Developing World List, at which time we will get the version of the Tablet sans the bugs and the quote, “some issues with the end to end customer experience”

The full lists reads, gentle people:

  1. U.K.
  2. Spain
  3. France
  4. The Netherlands
  5. Germany
  6. Italy
  7. Saudi Arabia
  8. The United Arab Emirates
  9. India
  10. Hong Kong
  11. Singapore
  12. Indonesia
  13. Australia
  14. Mexico
  15. Colombia
  16. Venezuela

Guess RIM is taking my advice of a global launch as stated in my article RIM PlayBook and Jamaica – Les French Conneccion Internacional.

Wishful thinking on my part!!

RIM, the company more popularly known for allegedly attempting to make a smartphone in the form of the RIM Blackberry Torch 9800, has apparently made a similar blunder with its PlayBook Tablet.

Granted, I had mucho grande hopes for their Tablet as expressed in my article RIM Playbook Launch Date – Win one for the Enterprise and Corporate Team.

But this latest rejection is yet another arrow shot from the quiver of the vocal critics of the PlayBook.

Critics among whom are numbered the Corporate and Business customers, who, despite their love for the Blackberry and its utilitarian Business email and BB Messenger functionality, desired a Tablet but merely got a Tablet shell that Bluetooth’s their Blackberry’s output onto a 7” screen.

Hopefully, RIM’s nose will stop growing and they WILL come clean with a Tablet design before the Fourth Quarter of 2011AD that I know would fulfill that which even Pinocchio (1940) would desire: to be a REAL Tablet!

Wouldn’t hurt to have a 3G/4G options, be thin as a slice of Organic Cheese, come with built in cameras for Video Calling, be synch-able over the Cloud and have more than stellar battery life.

In short, aspire to be more like the Apple CEO Steve Jobs media darling, the Apple iPad, as per my adoration article Apple iPad 2 – Dual-Core Easy Skankin’.

Otherwise O2 may not be the only Telecom Provider [Hint: Digicel and LIME in Jamaica!!] who may reject the PlayBook over “issues with the end to end customer experience”.

And they need to hurry; RIM Blackberry along with Nokia smartphones are already losing Global market share worldwide……with Google Android set to take 50% of the world by 2015AD.
