“The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many unexpected challenges to our life. As for the education sector, it has been a challenging time but all of us are working hard for the joint efforts of “school shut down, but education continues. Today we are proud to cooperate with the Government of Jamaica and all of you for the great effort and initiative of “One Laptop or Tablet per Child”.

Telecom Giants Huawei Jamaica had recently made a generous donation to The Ministry of Education towards their “One Laptop or Tablet per Child” initiative. The event took place by the Ministry headquarters located at heroes circle which brought together honorable ministers and company ambassadors to witness the handing over of tablets.

On January 7, 2021, a donation handover was conducted as Huawei Jamaica gave the Ministry of Education 500 of their MediaPad T3 10” LTE tablets, aiming to assist the government in their most recent initiative.

The “One Laptop or Tablet per Child” initiative had launched in October of last year. It is designed to promote inclusivity in the education sector while aiming to provide needy students, aside from those on the PATH program, with the essential tools to operate efficiently in the online teaching and learning environment.

One Laptop or Tablet per Child Initiative – MOE requires 100,000 devices for students

The Hon. Fayval Williams, said it is important to take this first step of ensuring these students have these devices as it is the first order of business. “Let me say a big thank you for this donation of 500 tablets, which I know adds to the 200 tablets that was donated to UTECH and UWI last year which brings this to a total of 700 tablets”, the Minister said.

She goes further to specially recognize Huawei for stepping forward, making such a donation to these children at such a critical time as the impact of this Covid-19 Pandemic has forced many children to still participate in school, however from home, via online.

Huawei believes greatly that access to education is vital to introducing opportunities that support fair and sustainable development. They also understand the impact the pandemic has had on many lives and thus has taken action to help where they can.

Huawei Tablet Donation – Making their contribution to Education in Jamaica

Huawei Jamaica has continuously lent a hand as they had donated 100 tablets each to tertiary schools UWI and UTECH in efforts to ensure access, not only to general technological learning, but their annual Seeds for the future program, held late last year.

This program sought to offer students ICT training and cultural exposure as they interacted with people across the globe all while gaining vital knowledge the Chinese company had to offer. The Ministry’s initiative has gained around 6,000 devices inclusive of the donation made by Huawei.

Their aim is to obtain an approximation of 100,000 devices for students. In order to provide these devices, an estimated cost of $4.5 billion will be needed. Therefore, the ministry seeks for any other donation from any generous company as Huawei had demonstrated.
