The Huawei Experience Store located at Shop No. 10 in Tropical Plaza Half-Way-Tree has finally deliver a Single-SIM smartphone that’s worth its weight in Nougat.
I’m of course referring to the Huawei Nexus 6P, which is slated to revealed Google Android 7.0 Nougat, the latest smartphone OS from Google.
The “P” which stands for “Premium” in the Nexus 6P, is actually being made on contract for Google by Huawei. The successors to the Nexus 6, it’s designed to be a standard bearer for how Google expects OEM (Original Equitpemt Manufacturers) to design their smartphones.
Release back in September 2015, the Huawei Nexus 6P is truly as tasty as its food-themed OS makes it sound. So what did I expect when I decided to do my review of the Nexus 6P?
Huawei Nexus 6P – From Huawei to Google with Love
The Huawei Nexus 6P is an Android 6.0 Marshmallow that has the potential to upgrade to Android 7.0 Nougat. It sports a 5.7″ AMOLED capacitive touchscreen that protected by the very strong and unscratchable Corning Gorilla Glass 4 that comes with an oleophobic (oil resistant) coating.
This is very important seeing as the Back, Home and Menu buttons are displayed on the touch screen, which tends to be a grease magnet!
It’s the successor the Nexus 6 but is a lot thinner than its predecessor, making gripping this smartphone very easy. The colour options have also improved over the original Nexus 6, with some new additions:
- Aluminium
- Graphite
- Frost
It has chamfered edges with the volume and power buttons on the right hands side as shown.
The left hand side sports a single nano-SIM tray near the headphone
The bottom has a USB-C port of charging a well as Data transfer, a rather forward thinking option for a smartphone from 2015.
Oddly, despite having the USB-C, the Nexus 6P still retains the 3.5mm headphone jack. This analog antique from the past will hopefully disappear in the next iteration of the Google Nexus smartphone!
On the back, there is a fingerprint sensor, dubbed Nexus Imprint, to protect all of those less-than-flattering pictures that you may wish, ensuring that they are for your eyes only. The back has a brushed aluminium finish and looks very refined despite its budget-cenric design.
With a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels and a pixel density of 518 ppi, the screen support multi-touch while producing a vibrant display can render some 16 million colours accurately. The Nexus P is quite a handful, with dimensions of 159.3 x 77.8 x 7.3 mm (6.27 x 3.06 x 0.29 in) and a hefty weight of 178 g (6.28 oz).
Huawei Nexus 6P – Marshmallow with a Nougat filling
On the inside, this nano-SIM smartphone has two options of the processor that it runs the OS:
- 4 x 1.55 GHz Octa-core Cortex-A53
- 4 x 2.0 GHz Octa-core Cortex-A57
Both processors us a Qualcomm MSM8994 Snapdragon 810 Chipset with an Adreno 430 GPU. Although both processors use the same RAM, there are three (3) choices for internal memory configuration based on the processor being used:
- 32 Internal Memory, 3 GB RAM
- 64 Internal Memory, 3 GB RAM
- 128 GB Internal Memory, 3 GB RAM
The Rear-Facing Camera is a 12 Megapixel Camera is made up of 1/2.3′ sensor supported by a Dual-LED Flash with an f/2.0 aperture and laser autofocus.
The Nexus supports Touch focus and has Face detection, making taking photos with this smartphone a breeze. The HDR (High Dynamic Range) really takes advantage of aperture and very sensitive sensors. Videographer will love the Nexus 6P as it supports two (2) different modes of video capture:
- 2160p at 30fps
- 720p at 240fps
The Front-Facing camera is a much smaller 8 Megapixel deal with a f/2.4 aperture. Still, it’s able to take great selfies and does 1080p video at 30fps.
The battery life that the Non-removable Li-Po 3450 mAh battery still fails to live up to expectation, with 440 h on 3G Stand-by, giving you 23 h Talk time. If you are of those types that use the Nexus 6P for music playback, you’ll get some 10 h worth of music out of this massive beast of a smartphone.
It’s highly recommended that you use a Bluetooth headset in this thing, as your elbow is liable to put out someone’s eye or even break someone’s rib when out in the wild. Good to note that the fingerprint reader unlocks really fast, allowing you to reach into your pocket and unlock while pulling out the smartphone.
Albeit having basic specs, the smartphone will really show off the great features of the Android 7.0 Nougat OS. So, is the Nexus 6P the replicant that your looking for, Blade Runner Style?
