Click on http://www.youtube.com/SamsungMobile to watch the Unpacked Event on Sunday February 21st 2016 live at noon!

Immediately after their Unpacked Event, their Samsung booth (Exhibit Hall 2 Stand 2M10) during MWC 2016 will be showcasing their latest technology developed for the ITU (International Telecommunication Union) 5G Mission Plan for IMT-2020.

So a busy February 2016 indeed!

Specifically their introducing the following technologies that they hope will help Telecom Providers deploy their 5G Networks come 2020:

  • Multilink connectivity technology
  • Centralized Radio
  • Internet of Things
  • mmWave Radio access solutions

Samsung also hopes to demonstrate their PS-LTE (Public-Safety LTE) Push-to-Talk services for Government Agencies with multiple handheld devices. They plan to show a typical emergency use case where 4G LTE with eMBMS (Evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services) transmitting HD videos and images to multiple devices instantly with minimized Network resources.

Running with a virtualized core solution, PS-LTE Network can be deployed and operated independently for each government agency, all controlled from a central NOC (Network Operations Centre):

  • Police
  • Fire services
  • National railways
  • Government Ministries

So how exactly will they help Telecom Providers deploy their 5G Networks come 2020?

Samsung and 5G Technology – Millimeter wavelengths to satisfy ITU and 3GPP specifications

Samsung plans to demonstrate their use of Millimetre wavelengths for 5G utilizing spectrum as far up in side of the band as 6GHz.

Normally at such frequencies, the signal will face severe attenuation due to structural as well as atmospheric anomalies. Samsung will demonstrate the robustness of the 5G Technology they’ve developed to work at these frequencies by transmitting eight (8) Ultra High-Definition 4K videos over the air without delays over these mmWave Radio systems for spectrums above 6GHz.

Their tests are intended to show:

  • Low latency of less than one millisecond
  • High speed data communication in gigabit throughput

Samsung also has a surprise planned for y’all. Aside from PS-LTE, they’re also going to demonstrate a world first; a mobile handover test using the mmWave Radio system and smartphone-integrated, multiple antenna modules in a small form factor. Millimeter Waves, which are in the 30 Ghz to 300 Ghz range, are being tested for use for 5G wireless broadband technology due to their high bandwidth.

Samsung hopes to demonstrate to OEM as well as Telcos that it is possible to have smartphone sized devices that can handle handovers at such high frequencies that can provide the required 5G Bandwidth as per the ITU and 3GPP specifications and still have enough battery power to do other tasks.

Samsung and Multi-link Connectivity Solution – One Network and One Backhaul

Samsung realizes that telcos need their Network Architecture to be simple and flexible. Most Networks are Heterogeneous, consists of multiple transmission technologies that are a headache to manage, often with their own separate Platforms:

  • LTE/WiFi
  • Macro/small cells
  • Licensed/unlicensed spectrums
  • Different generations from 2G to 5G

To address these problems, Samsung plans to introduce a range of solutions that will unify these diverse Platforms:

  • LTE-U (LTE-Unlicensed)
  • LAA (License Assisted Access)
  • MP-TCP (Multi-Path Transfer Control Protocol)
  • D-RAN Inter-site Carrier Aggregation
  • Samsung Smart Multi-Linktm

So what exactly are these technologies?

MP-TCP and Smart Multi-Linktm – One Network under Unified Core Architecture

MP-TCP, a key technology for Samsung, allows aggregation among independent Heterogeneous Networks using different technologies namely:

  • Wi-Fi
  • IoT
  • 3G
  • 4G
  • 5G

It unifies the management of these Networks, including non-3GPP standard based Networks such as WiMaX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) into one common Platform.

This is done at the IP (Internet Protocol) layer making aggregation simpler and faster.

How Samsung's 5G Technologies on display at MWC 2016 will help Telcos

Smart Multi-Linktm, another first-time innovation based on their Unified Core Architecture, is designed to be forward and backward compatible with 2G to 5G technology. Smart Multi-Linktm enables the transformation of distributive Networks, often called Backhaul Networks that interconnect the Node B’s of these Main Networks into one unified and flexible Backhaul Network using the following Technologies:

  • NFV (Network Function Virtualization)
  • SDN (Self Defined Network)

This makes it possible for all Networks from 2G to 5G to share the same IPRAN (Internet Protocol Radio Access Network) or Fiber Optic Network that interconnects them back to the MSC (Mobile Switching Center) more efficiently instead of the Telecom Provider having to commission new Backhaul Networks for each deployed Network.

So what is Samsung’s RAN Solution?

Samsung’s RAN Solution in Korea – C-RAN 2.0+ for Heterogeneous Networks evolution to 5G Networks

There is already there was a deployment of MP-TCP in South Korea back in 2015, making the world’s most data-centric countries one of the first to test out Samsung’s solution to the spider’s web of incompatible Networks and Platforms.

Referred to as C-RAN, short for Centralized RAN, the technology works exactly as its name implies; a centralized hub is used to handle the routing of Data Traffic over a RAN (Radio Access Network). The C-RAN Technology is currently in its second year of upgrades, with C-RAN 2.0+ being slowly introduced via upgrades.

C-RAN 2.0+, which benefits from Samsung’s Smart SON and Smart Scheduler, allows the Node B’s to do the following:

  • Detect the interference at the cell-edge
  • Real-time Control Radio transmission power
  • 40% to 50% Data throughput achieved from

C-RAN is considered a revolution in the cellular industry’s future. It will make managing and upgrading the RAN to use mmWaves and eventually optical frequencies easier, enabling Telecom Operators to upgrade their Heterogeneous Networks to deploy their 5G Networks.

Samsung and IoT – Mission-Critical IoT services and Public-Safety LTE for 2017 and beyond

Samsung is heavily invested in the IoT, with most of their consumer electronics products such as UHDTV and SUHD TV.

One such example, announced earlier in January at CES 2016 is Samsung’s SmartThings Platform, gives you control over your home from your TV as described in How Samsung’s SmartThings Platform makes CES 2016 SUHD TV’s IoT Ready.

This year at their Samsung booth, Samsung’s IoT Core has a set of Gateways and various Radio access solutions for Telecom Providers:

  • Standalone IoT base station
  • IoT integrated DU (Digital Unit)
  • LoRaTM based Unlicensed Low Power Wide Area (LPWA)

Samsung also plans to provide Telecom Providers with Mission-Critical IoT services for integration into consumer electronics as well as their own Platforms. Their Mission-Critical IoT service, a new use case incorporated with Public Safety-LTE, fulfils the requirements of 3GPP standards in 2016, namely:

  • CAT-0
  • CAT-1
  • CAT-M
  • NB-IoT

They’re also developing their Mission-Critical IoT for 2017 and beyond towards 2020, when 5G Networks are expected to be deployed by most Telecom Providers. With IoT interconnecting more objects to the Telecom Providers, tracking data flow to these devices will become key.

Not only will Samsung fulfil its requirements for 3GPP standards such as CAT-0, CAT-1, CAT-M, NB-IoT in 2016, but the company will also unveil its standard beyond technologies in 2017, which will be especially optimal for Mission-Critical IoT.

Samsung and 5G Broadband – mmWave and Optical Tech with C-RAN

Samsung has its finger on the pulse as it relates to the gear that Telecom Providers will need for deploying 5G Networks come 2020.

They see unified Heterogeneous Platforms that deliver 5G Broadband using mmWave and Optical technologies with C-RAN that’ll power the IoT, Iron Man Style at MWC 2016!
