Google’s up to something that may be a huge gamechanger in the Operating System World: an operating system made for IoT devices that works on 5G and geared towards women.

And it’s Purple. Or Magenta. Like Really?

Apparently fearing the death of Android and its Food themed Smartphone and Tablet OS as well as prepping for 5G Networks by 2020, they’ve begun working on a completely new Operating System called Fuchsia.

It already has a few famous project members such as Travis Geislebrecht, whose background includes work on Palm, Apple, Danger (makers of the Sidekick) OS projects and Jawbone are well documented. The code for Fuchsia, which has been steadily growing on Fuchsia’s GitHub page, lists Google developers Christopher Anderson and Brian Swetland, both experts in embedded systems in Android TV and Nexus Q projects.

It’s totally different from both Android and Chrome OS, as it’s built from scratch and isn’t based on the Linux kernel. The core is based on a code called Magenta and it appears to be geared towards IoT devices such as those based on Raspberry Pi.

So what’s in the name Fuchsia? And why is the Core Called Magenta?

First used in the English language as a colour in 1892, the plant was discovered by 16th century German botanist Leonhart Fuchs. Fuchsia flowers contain a wide variety of purples and were the inspiration for French chemist Francois-Emmanuel Verguin, who named the aniline dye called fuchsine after the plant.

That soon changed after the victory of the French Army on June 4, 1859 in the Battle of Magenta. So yes its history means it’s easily confused with magenta, as in the RGB color model, it’s made by mixing blue and red light at full and equal intensity.

However, to women, Fuchsia is usually more purplish color, whereas magenta is more reddish.

Possibly too, in keeping with the female-centric slant, versions will be based on shades of the colour (Fuschia is purple, for us men!) or the names of plants various species, which has more variety than Foods based on the Alphabet!

Based on Google’s penchant for dual symbolism, is this Fuchsia OS with a Magenta Core is definitely being built for IoT products and services geared towards women, as only they bother themselves to distinguish different shades of purple.

So what products and services will Fuchsia OS be used in?

Clearly Google is making a new OS to meet the demands of 5G Networks, which will resemble Wi-Fi Mesh Networks as predicted in 5G Networks with Renewable Energy, Fiber Optic Waveguides and AI.

Expect this OS to not only replace both Android and Chrome OS, making it a fresh start for Google, but also be capable of running on low-memory low power devices such as:

  • Dash infotainment systems for cars
  • Traffic lights
  • Robots
  • Drones
  • Digital watches

Yes, I also imagine smartphones, tablets and PCs may also run on Fuchsia OS, unifying these as one platform and correcting the fragmentation issues of the past as noted in Why Android Fragmentation Worsens as Apple iOS 8 adoption almost complete.

Hopefully, the Googlers at Mountain View, California will also cajole the OEM’s to work together this time around, instead of jumping ahead and trying to outdo each other with gimmicks instead of real features as pointed out in Real Features wanted by Global Android users as Marshmallow welcomes Nougat.

We’ll know more details come Google I/O 2017, when Google is slated to release it to OEM’s and Software, Hardware and Application Developers to get them started on making plant themed products.
