Speed and general performance:

One of the biggest hypes surrounding Wimax is its speed and performance when compared with other mobile offering, but how does it really perform? Wimax itself has a limit of up to 75mbps, however real world speeds are from 2mbps to 12mbps due to network dicing and spectrum allocation. Faster than 15mbps is uncommon but very much possible according to intel, with more spectrum allocated and better backhaul to each transmitter site.

The performance of Digicel’s Wimax varies from one location to the other with speeds ranging from 2.5mbps in very rural areas to 7 and 8mbps in more urban areas such as town centers. This variation have to do with some very obvious reasons including vegetation density and the amount of persons using the service from each tower at any one time. Where I live is outside of the official 60% coverage area, however I was still about to use the service with a bit of setting up.

Edit: Since I started writing of the review during the testing period of the the serviceanother site might have gone up in my area so results have changed dramatically.

First things first here is my location on google maps:

Coordinates: +18° 9′ 17.70″, -77° 3′ 19.80″. The area marked ‘A’ of course is my house and it is located in a bowl-like limestone depression surrounded by acres of grass, just how well did the service do?

The above screenshot shows my average speed up to Wednesday Aug 4, 2010 at 10: 00 AM, since then my speeds have almost tripled which can be seen below.

My explanation for the speed bump in the course of a day is that a wimax site might have been erected closer to me than the others were previously. The speed boost and lower ping results now makes streaming video a pleasure and it is now possible for me to watch D1 quality tv online. D1 is widescreen video at 720 × 480 or 720 × 576 for 4:3, the same resolution tv uses so it is quite possible to comfortably stream tv on your PC, as well as play graphic intensive online games.

  1. There is a picture of both modems in part 1, more pictures coming in the final portion of the review.

  2. Nice looks good, i have one question tho, What is the bandwidth cap that they impose?

Cause Claro has a 3GB bandwidth cap, over that they cut your speed down to edge status. For Lime, its the amount you pay for and after you go over that they charge you per megabyte.

  3. No there are no bandwidth limitations; the service is unlimited like any other broadband solution.
