Looks like the Apple iPad is in some Danger for once folks. This as Worldwide Marketshare of the Apple iPad recently took a hit, dropping from a lofty 94% in the Second Quarter of 2010AD to 61% in the Second Quarter of 2011AD as stated by Strategy Analytics. Take a Gander at their handy chart below:
Note that albeit shipments for both Android Tablets and Apple iOS Tablets, counted in millions of units, have increased, partly driven by the popularity of the Apple iPad 2 as hero-worshipped in my adoration article Apple iPad 2 – Dual-Core Easy Skankin’, Android’s Global Marketshare has DRAMATICALLY increased! By a whopping 27.2%, folks.
Meanwhile Apple iOS has dropped by an equally jaw dropping 33%, incredible Marketshare movements taking place when the Second Quarter of 2010AD and Second Quarter of 2011AD are compared. The increase in sales I expected, as the “post-PC era” as CEO Steve Jobs intones is upon us, a concept explained in my article Are we witnessing Laptop and PC Extinction?
This and Amazon is yet to debut their much rumoured Tablet as Kelroy’s article Amazon to give birth to family of Android devices? clearly states and my article InStat prediction that Tablets to Overtake e-Readers is off base implies.
An Amazon Tablet about which Director at Strategy Analytics Neil Mawston says will shake up the market, quote: “If Amazon decides to enter the Android Tablet category later this year, that will bring fresh excitement and buzz to the Android community, but Amazon will need to deliver a truly standout offering if it really wants to make headway against the popular iPad”.
To be honest, I am quite surprised at Android Tablets rapid progress to the point of even appearing to reduce the Global marketshare of the previously unstoppable Juggernaut that was the Apple iPad, which made its debut on Saturday 3rdApril 2010, the start of the Second Quarter of 2010AD. Which would explain their 94% dominance in the second Quarter of 2010AD, as the Samsung Galaxy P1000 Tablet stole some of their thunder in the Fourth Quarter of 2010AD, around Christmas 2010AD as my article Samsung Galaxy – Apple iPad’s Contender for Christmas points out!
As for the current Second Quarter of 2011AD market share dip? Simply put, a murder of crows are coming to pick at Apple’s carcass in much the same way the Apple iPhone market dominance is now under threat as I had pointed out earlier in my article Apple iPhone and Google Android – Helms Deep Under Attack.
For a bit of Perspective, both Nielsen, ComScore and IDC predict Android to own 50% of the smartphone market in 2015AD as prognosticated in my article Apple’s Revolution: Android @ Home and IceCream Sandwich in 2015AD.
Apple now has to be considering a redesign of the Apple iPhone to target the mid-market of “feature” phones as my article Towards a cheaper Apple iPhone – Batteries Not Included the last bit of growth area left in the US of A. a market that has now 50% of all mobile phones users sporting a smartphone according to analyst NPD.
Google promises more with their latest update, Google Android 4.0 aka IceCream, with which they intend to take over the world as chronicled in my article Apple’s Revolution: Android @ Home and IceCream Sandwich in 2015AD.
And with every major maker of computers and smartphones from the Far East i.e. Samsung, Sony, Lenovo, LG, Acer, HTC, Asus as well as from Silicon Valleyi.e. Dell, Motorola, RIM, Hewlett Packard planning to or already launching a Tablet, Android may be the kindling that ignites a Tablet Bonfire with which to roast the Apple iPad!
So with more Android Tablets and Tablet in general on the horizon, a follow up article is defiantly coming at the end of the Third Quarter of 2011AD. Android, the Hot Steppa, is making its presence felt and the Ivory Towers of the Cupertino Kids who live at Infinite Loop Drive are certainly shaking at the hoof beats of the coming horde.
