Tech tutorials, howtos and walkthroughs

The Caribbean’s leading health technology company, Advanced Integrated Systems (AIS) aims to improve the quality of healthcare through telemedicine.

AIS have already rolled out technology that will transform Jamaica into a country with the most comprehensive health information database, making telemedicine an easy transition. Telemedicine is the use of telecommunication and information technology to provide clinical health care from a distance.

At the recent Jamaica Association of Private Pharmacy Operators, JAPPO Business Conference, Douglas Halsall Chairman & CEO for AIS introduced the attendees to Dyno Sense, a telehealth and remote care management system.

He was clearly very enthusiastic about the product ability to remotely monitor patients with a smartphone app, giving the doctor real-time information on the condition of their patients, quote: “My enthusiasm for DynoSense is that they have products that can monitor your body’s functions remotely and an app that can feed information to your doctor and caregiver. It’s particularly easy to manage so anyone can use it and be able to monitor their health daily and do comparisons weekly, monthly and even yearly”.

These sensors includes a device that can measure a range of health metrics as pointed out by AIS CEO Douglas Halsall, quote: “One of the products, for example allows you to breathe normally through a sensor and in less than a minute provides 15 health metrics including electrocardiogram, heart rate, heart rate variability, oral temperature, blood oxygen saturation, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, arterial stiffness index, atrial fibrillation, atrial tachycardia, atrioventricular, premature ventricular contraction, premature atrial contraction and galvanic skin response”.

There is also a smart scale that also provides a range of rather impressive metrics, quote: “In addition, a smart composite scale provides readings on weight, body mass index, basal metabolic rate, body fat, visceral fat, bone density, muscle mass, and body water once the user steps on it barefooted”.

Finally, these telemedicine devices offer the patient the ability to manage a wide range of illness along with an alert system and video calling to talk to the patient to quote Douglas Halsall: “The technology also offers diagnosis management of issues including diabetes, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hypertension, depression/schizophrenia, dementia, smoking cessation and substance abuse. There is a daily monitoring and alert system, interactive video and voice calling that can accommodate three users at once and messaging”.

Over the years there have been many instances where patients ran the risk of receiving incorrect medication due to the illegible handwriting of their doctor. With the implementation of telemedicine, this will be averted. AIS is focused on ensuring that the accessibility and convenience of healthcare in Jamaica are increased. This move when fully implemented will certainly revolutionize the healthcare service industry.

Electronic prescription is an important part of this configuration and is set to change the entire pharmacy and health care landscape. This will not only remove long waiting lines inside doctors’ offices, but also improve access to medical services that would not be consistently available in distant rural communities or for persons who are immobile.

Telemedicine, an amalgam of Telecoms and Medicine, is the future of medical diagnosis and treatment in Jamaica!
