Believe it or not, it’s now 5 years to the day that DJ Powa produced and shared a Youtube video that has cemented its place in Jamaica’s social media folklore. Titled “Nobody Canna Cross It – Twanging (Refix Video) – DJ Powa”; the video created a social media firestorm that made short-lived stars out of Clifton Brown and DJ Powa. Dozens of radio, TV and newspaper interviews followed for both men as well as endorsement deals; even appearances on reggae/dancehall shows for Clifton.

Putting Quirky Interviews to Music

The remixing of interviews to music was all the rage back then with Antoine’s “Bedroom Intruder” and Sweet Brown “Ain’t Nobody Got Time for That” being international standouts but DJ Powa’s “Nobody Canna Cross It” brought the phenomenon to Jamaica after a few trials with “Patty Shop” and “What are Deading”.

Can you cross it?

Clifton’s interview literally modified the vernacular of Jamaicans at home and abroad with “swimming buses” suddenly appearing and everyone’s ability to “cross it” being questioned at every opportunity. “St Thomas Pan” became the place no one wanted to go and everyone had a new respect for “fishermaan” and “fisherwomaan” especially if you couldn’t swim.

Clifton is King

In the years since many “remixed” videos of Jamaicans doing quirky interviews have come and gone – the most memorable of which was “Tutty Gran” and the gem that made a star of Gully Bop. However, Cliff-Twang remains king as 6 million views later no one has crossed it just yet.
