Not long ago Flickr was the undisputed king of the social media hill when it came to photography. However after years of being the leader by being on the bleeding edge of innovation Yahoo allowed the property to stagnate and it was eventually overtaken by newer trendier products such as 500px and other social media offerings such as Facebook, Tumblr, Google+, Instagram which offered more than just a online gallery with a few community and sharing features tacked on.
Yahoo has revamped Flickr and increased the available free storage on the site to a whopping 1 terabyte. For the less tech savvy among us; 1 TB = 1000000000000 bytes = 1000 gigabytes, the average total hard drive space in computers these days is about half a terabyte or 500 gigabytes. What this means is that Flickr users can store far many more photos without the need to upgrade to a premium account.
A massive upgrade in storage space is not the only change for Flickr. The entire user interface and functionality of the website has been revamped including the mobile apps so that the service makes better use of a user’s screen at the expense of useless white-space. A higher space limit on photo uploads and ability to upload videos up to 3 minutes (up from 90 seconds) are also two other attractive updates the new Flickr boasts.
Whether this upgrade is too little too late only time will tell but as a photography enthusiast myself who prefers the serious/professional users on Flickr vs the casual snappers on Facebook, Instagram etc this could offer a reason to return IF there is an actually community feel again; makes so sense you go back to a refurbished playground if you are the only kid there.
