Tech tutorials, howtos and walkthroughs

This just in, my dear readers! Windows 7 is now the No. 1 Operating System for WinTel (Windows and Intel) machines worldwide. This after bearing the dominance of the Windows XP OS, which has held that position for the last ten (10) years, a testament ironically more to the power of software piracy than the quality of the OS!

Personally I find this all surprising, as it was only a six (6) months ago that Windows XP was King of the Hill, according to the Statistics of Consumer Report in April 2011AD the US of A. But statistics never lie and analyst and Web Statistician StatCounter handy graphic shows when the break even point occurred between the months of October 2010AD to September 2011AD.

For those with a penchant for words, here is the October 2011AD stats rap sheet:

  1. Windows 7 – 41%
  2. Windows XP – 40%
  3. Windows Vista – 11%
  4. Apple Mac OS X – 7%

Now compare them to the stats from Consumer Reports from April 2011AD:

  1. Windows XP – 54%
  2. Windows 7 – 24%
  3. Windows Vista – 7%

Yes that’s real tight folks! Bit of a historical note:

  1. Windows XP has been on the marker for ten (10) years since release in 2001
  2. Windows 7 is just twenty four (24) months old since its release in 2009
  3. Windows Vista only lasted twelve (12) months in the wild since its release in 2010

Despite the success of the Apple iPad beating PC in terms of marketshare, which runs on Apple iOS, machines running Apple Mac OS X, the latest version of Apple Mac OS, occupies only a measly but statistically significant 7% of the Computer OS Global Standings.

To be honest, in repairing PC and Laptops, I prefer the stability of Windows XP Professional SP3 to Windows 7, which only appears stable if it is Windows 7 SP1. But increasingly, I get requests for Window 7, specifically Windows 7 Ultimate SP1, as most people like the interactive and fresh Linux feel of the interface, which is reminiscent of Mac OS X.

Windows 8, which is on the horizon for a First Quarter of 2012AD launch, appears to be mainly Cloud-based in nature for the show and tell at the D9 Conference on Wednesday June 2nd 2011AD , with Microsoft Office 365, now available for public beta testing since April 2011AD is a professional step-up from the primitive Notepad-esque interface of Google Docs.

Windows 8 has a focus on Tablets and PC, despite the survival of the PC being somewhat unclear in a world now ruled increasingly by Apple and Google Android on smartphones and Tablets as noted in Android Tablets gain on the Apple iPad – Here Comes the Hot Steppa.

Clearly Windows 8 has its work cut out for it. But it may not be all uphill for Windows 8!

This as the Wintel Partnership, which appeared to be on the rocks, is built on a solid foundation of Corporate and Enterprise Support and Printing, something which the current crop of Tablets have largely overlooked.

Worse no standards exist for Cloud Printers, making room for improvement to the advantage of Windows 8. This as Printer Makers such as HP, Epson and Canon will continue to lean towards as Tablets for Corporate and Enterprise World, the bread-and-butter for Printer makers, mainly because Windows is STILL the dominant OS out in the wild, as evident from the above Statistics.

Tablets running Windows 8 are slated to go live in 2012AD, just in time for the London Olympics set for July 27th 2012AD. Thus, the lack of Cloud Printing options for Tablets is merely a case of the Printer Makers waiting for Windows 8 Tablets, which they expect Corporate and Enterprise users to adopt rapidly, thus fuelling demand for Cloud Printing.

Jamaica may not be too far behind either, as Digicel has already introduced Cloud Telephony as noted in Digicel Cloud Telephony to Make Switched Voice Extinct which is aimed at Corporate, Enterprise and SME (Small and Medium Enterprise) so support for Cloud Printing Platforms may be the next announced product in their suite of Cloud-Based Applications.

The Virtual Office in Jamaica is very real, folks, empowering our Road Warriors in a coming Tele-Commuting Work Paradigm as per the article Jamaica’s 100MBps Internet Silver Lining – Tele-commuting Workplace is coming.

And you thought statistics was boring!
