WhatsApp Messenger is a cross-platform mobile messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. It has exploded in popularity with over 1 billion users worldwide. It is available for iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows phones and Nokia phones.

Though it has taken some flack for being insecure it has become an affordable alternative to SMS and even phone calls. After the first year of free use many users were prompted to pay US$0.99 to keep using the service but going forward that fee will be removed.
