Tech tutorials, howtos and walkthroughs

Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games have come a long way since the days of Ultima Online and Everquest. The genre has seen massive growth on the back on every increasing internet speeds, newer and better computers and more and more persons having access to games and the internet. These days there are literally hundreds of MMOs in various fantasy, historical, real life and scifi lands but the biggest shark in the pool has for a a long while been World of Warcraft.

I have for as long as I can remember been an avid gamer and I remember trying my hand at WoW in it’s early days but it was a pass-time that didn’t stick for various reasons. Before that I had dabbled with Final Fantasy XI plus many more paid and free MMOs between then and now and my most recent MMO “trial” came with Rift which I lost interest in after about 2 months not because it was a bad game but because of poor lore and my inability to connect with the community.

The MMO that I have been rabidly following for the last three years has been Star Wars the Old Republic which I view as a mating of so many of the things I like. Bioware is a game developer known for it’s excellent story driven games such a Neverwinter Nights, Mass effect and Dragon Age. Star Wars is an international brand loved by millions with a story and backdrop that personally I thought would make a great MMO.

Star Wars: The Old Republic collector's edition goodies

Star Wars: The Old Republic has been baking a long ime in the oven and has broken many hearts and turned off others will it’s long development time and delays but those who held out can FINALLY see the light at the end of the tunnel with the December 20th release date (Dec 15 for those who preordered, like me ^_^). I played the the beta version of SWTOR over the Thanksgiving and while I may not be an experienced MMORPG player I thought that it was an excellent game that may have benefited from my WoW virginity and short fling with Rift. Here we have a polished MMO from a well known studio being published by one of the biggest video game companies in the world set in a world that millions will flock to. There has never been a better time to check out a MMO or upgrade from your old one.

I’ll have lots more to say about SWTOR in the coming weeks so say tuned to Geezam.com for more. I am considering doing a SWTOR diary of sorts as I play through the game as well as some other highlights on features on the game as I truly believe that baring any unforeseen hiccups it will be a massive success and do more that just shake the crown atop WoW’s head. Looking forard to Playing SWOTOR too? Leave a comment below and maybe our paths will cross somewhere in the Star Wars Galaxy.

One response to “Star Wars: The Old Republic to make a big splash in the MMORPG pool”

  1. Its way too early for it to even be looking in the direction of WoW perhaps after a year or two, but until then love it or hate it WoW is MMORPG God and at the moment except for some gems like Eve Online it really has no competitor.
