“Our 2016 lineup of audio products offers the most immersive sound ever experienced in the home. Samsung’s new Soundbar with Dolby Atmos® technology, delivers the ultimate in cinematic home entertainment, especially when paired with Samsung’s new SUHD TVs.”

Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics, John JY Kim, commenting on Samsung’s new soundbar based on Dolby Atmos® technology

Samsung seems to have an unusual obsession with soundbars for their Smart TV’s.

CES 2016 made this quite clear when they introduce upgrades to their HW-K950 Soundbar in their Wireless Audio 360 audio series. This trip to Samsung’s massive Booth, #11906, located in the Central Hall, saw their latest soundbar featuring Dolby Atmos® technology.

Samsung's HW-K950 Soundbar features Dolby Atmos for 3D Home Audio

Good to note here that the R5 model of the Wireless Audio 360 series has also been recognized as an honoree in the CES 2016 Innovation Awards as noted in How Samsung won 100 Innovation Awards at CES 2016.

The HW-K950 Soundbar is the industry’s first soundbar package to include two Dolby Atmos®-enabled wireless rear speakers. The 2.1” HW-K950 Soundbar is a 5.1.4-channel, which means it has five (5) speakers:

  • 3 forward-facing
  • 2 upwards-facing speakers

The need for ceiling-fitted speakers to produce moving, 3D audio is thus eliminated by the two (2) upwards-facing speakers. This makes the sleek and slim speaker design delivers realistic, cinematic sounds, from an arrow shooting across the room to a hummingbird flying overhead.

Bluetooth connectivity allows the HW-K950 Soundbar to become a part of your home entertainment system, connecting wireless to subwoofer and rear speaker units that come with the Audio 360 audio series. The HW-K950 Soundbar also features proprietary Ring Radiator technology making your audio sound great, filling your space with vibrant, yet balanced sound, no matter where it is placed in your home.

The decision to include the Dolby Atmos® technology was thus based on their pedigree as the go-to technology for reproducing realistic audio to make Samsung’s home theatre sound experience become something memorable.

So says Senior Vice President, Dolby Laboratories, Doug Darrow: “Dolby Atmos® has received overwhelming support from major studios and continues to expand into other form factors, including the new Samsung HW-K950 Soundbar, which allows more consumers to bring an unrivalled sound experience into their homes. Consumers can experience sound that comes alive from all directions, including overhead, to fill their home theaters with astonishing clarity, power, detail and depth”.

So is the HW-K950 Soundbar easier to control?
