Tech tutorials, howtos and walkthroughs

“With improvements in smart, fitness devices and an increase in consumer health consciousness, more and more people are looking for ways to monitor various personal bio-data, or fitness data, to constantly manage their health. Samsung’s Bio-Processor, which can process five different biometric signals, is the most versatile health and fitness monitoring chip available on the market today and is expected to open up many new health- based service options for our customers”

Vice President of marketing, System LSI business at Samsung Electronics, Ben K. Hur, commenting on Samsung’s Bio-Processor

Samsung has just made the smartwatch take center stage once more.

They’ve now developed the Bio-Processor, a SoC (System on a Chip) designed to be used in smartwatches and fitness trackers. It’s being mass produced to address the growing quantified health market where the health-conscious want to track their health and fitness on a daily basis.

So how does the Samsung Bio-Processor herald the return of fitness trackers?

Samsung Bio-Processor – Little but Tallawah Processor with huge ambitions

Samsung Bio-Processor achieves quite a neat trick; it’s the industry’s first all-in-one health solution chip that still manages to be small enough to fit into the current crop of wearable devices on the market.

Packed into that small size are the following components:

  • AFE (Analog Front Ends)
  • DSP (Digital Signal Processor
  • eFlash memory
  • MCU (Microcontroller unit)
  • PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit)

Samsung’s Bio-Processor despite its size, is able to process the bio-signals it measures without needing of external processing parts. This taps into the desire expressed by fitness fanatics to measure every aspect of their physiology and not just count step or measure their heart rate but to motivate them to exercise properly.

The rise of the quantified health market means that every aspect of your health can be tracked with an accuracy rivaling that of your local physician. To meet such demands, Samsung’s Bio-Processor integrates five (5) AFEs into their design:

  • Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Galvanic skin response (GSR)
  • Photoplethysmogram (PPG)
  • Skin temperature

But rather than supplant the knowledge of medical professionals, the Bio-Processor is design to be so accurate that even your physician can consult the reading to determine the following metrics:

  • Body fat
  • Skeletal muscle mass
  • Heart rate
  • Heart rhythm
  • Skin temperature
  • Stress level

With the quantified health market set to explode, Samsung is ramping up production of their new Bio-Processor. Expect to see these devices in fitness/health devices within the first half of 2016 as well as new applications involving tracking the health of workers in stressful situations.
