There is a new king of the Appstore and Playstore – bigger than Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram and more in-app time than Facebook; that app is Pokemon Go. The game was released in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States on July 6, 2016 and like contagion spread across the interwebs infection iPhones and Android phones alike even in territories where the app isn’t officially released.
Every has got to catch ’em all!
Users were setting their Appstore locations to places where the app was released and eagle-eyed Android users sideloaded the APK file resulting in a tremendous strain on the Pokemon go server(s). Niantic, an American software development company based in San Francisco, California has been doing their best to keep the service online and slowly expanding to other countries but the demand to “catch ’em all” has been off the charts.
Pokemon Go has now become a social spectacle with keen Pokemon trainers exploring far and wide to catch Pokemon. The app uses your phone’s clock, GPS and Camera to display Pokemon in the real world using augmented reality.
Young Jamaicans go crazy for Pokemon
In Jamaica hundreds of players have been playing the game with social media set alight as players share information and enjoy friendly competition between the three in-game teams. Valor (red), Instinct (Yellow) and Mystic (Blue) are the three in-game teams players can choose at level 5. Real-world places in Jamaica such as UWI Mona, the Half-Way-Tree Transport Centre, Emancipation Park and Utech Sculpture Park have overnight become hot-spots for players battling for control of gyms. Poketrainers in some other Caribbean islands such as Trinidad are reporting that the app doesn’t work properly in their counties with Pokemon spawning sporadically or not at all.
Be safe out there and enjoy Pokemon Go! We’ll be following its development keenly and will provide more info on what might be the most popular mobile application of all time.
