Jamaica’s leading telecommunications company, LIME, today announced an unprecedented low one rate of $2.99 per minute for all pre-paid calls to any domestic and select international numbers.

As of midnight tonight, LIME’s standard Talk EZ Prepaid customers will enjoy the historically low $2.99 per minute rate – billed on a per second basis – to call locally as well as the USA, Canada and landlines in the U.K. While the Talk EZ plan is the default option for all new LIME customers, existing subscribers may activate the plan by dialling *123*1# from any mobile phone.

The introduction of the reduced rate also comes three weeks ahead of the July 1 implementation date for the new Mobile Termination Rate (MTR) announced by the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) last week.

The revolutionary rate announcement was made during a webcast hosted via the company’s Social Media pages. Garfield Sinclair, CEO, LIME Jamaica and Cayman revealed that the rate which is applied for the company’s TALK EZ prepaid plan for on-net prepaid and international calls to the USA, Canada & UK landlines will now extend to calls made to subscribers on its rival competitors’ network, Digicel.

He told viewers online, “We are again delivering on the promise of value to Jamaican consumers. With this new Talk EZ rate, customers will think nothing of calling any number in Jamaica, the USA, Canada and landlines in the U.K. They all cost the same $2.99 per minute – billed per second.”

Mr. Sinclair added, “We expect that this all-time-low rate will give consumers ‘sitting on the fence’ the best incentive to come and experience true mobile value.”

Coming from $6.99 per minute – the new LIME cross network rate of $2.99 represents a 60% reduction in the cost to call across networks for its mobile subscribers. Digicel customers currently pay up to $14.20 per minute to call the LIME network.

Sinclair further announced an extraordinary offer for persons wishing to capitalize on the company’s new rate adjustment with an in-store deal that will see customers receiving a free Alcatel 296 handset and a free SIM card with the purchase of $1000 pre-paid mobile call credit. The two-day offer will be available at LIME stores island-wide from Friday, June 7 to Saturday, June 8.

On announcing the additional offer the LIME CEO said, “This best-value offer makes it that much easier for consumers to take advantage of our all-time-low ‘Talk EZ’ rate and save even more money.”

LIME, which has emerged as the clear mobile value provider, announced a dramatic rate cut in on and off-network calls on June 14 last year, when the Office of Utility Regulation (OUR) issued its Interim Determination to reduce the Mobile Termination Rate from $9 to $5 per minute.

The company which successfully advocated for a level telecoms playing field has welcomed the OUR’s announcement of the $1.10 MTR that was communicated to service providers on May 30.

Through this move, LIME furthers on its commitment to pass on the savings to consumers.
