Huawei P8 is a smartphone Versailles opulence Arc de Triumph for Huawei

The Huawei Experience Store located at Shop No. 10 in Tropical Plaza Half-Way-Tree packs a punch with a pair of fetching twins.

I’d previously reviewed the Huawei P8 Lite and much of their usage of metal in their design as noted in Huawei P8 Lite is Black White and Gold Metallic Luxury.

So I expected the original Huawei P8, upon which the P8 Lite is based, would be lavished in metal, upping the ante on its lightweight cousin. I wasn’t disappointed as when I got the chance to review the Huawei P8, it was clear that this Smartphone was in a class by itself.

Huawei P8 Packaging – Lavishly done packaging and actual Paper Manuals

Launched back in April 2015, a month before the P8 Lite, the Android 4.4.2 KitKat is on the upgrade wagon towards Android 6 Marshmallow with an Emotion 3.1 UI. It has dimensions of 144.9 x 72.1 x 6.4 mm (5.70 x 2.84 x 0.25 in) and weighs in at 144 g (5.08 oz).

The Huawei P8 is packaged in a box that evokes feeling of a very fancy Chinese treasure Box with unusual hidden compartments. I’ve seen this type of packaging before in the Huawei P8 Lite; this seems a bit more lavish than before.

The packaging opens up to reveal a very dark theme, showing white manuals, headphones and microSB Chargers!

The packaging of the charger, headphones and microUSB cable are especially well done and contrast sharply against the black plastic background. Surprisingly, it also has paper manuals, a joy for people like myself who dislike online FAQ’s!

So now on to the Huawei P8 itself!

Huawei P8 – Refined Aesthetics with shadows of the Apple iPhone 6

The Huawei P8 is uniformly flat at 6.4mm thin and doesn’t even have a Rear-Camera bulge.

The right side has raised power button and volume rocker that allow for blind usage, with your fingers being the eyes, so you don’t have to turn away from what you’re doing. The micro-SIM and microSD card slot trays are accessible using the included micro-SIM card removal pin.

The top has a 3.5mm noise cancelling headphone Jack and the bottom has a microUSB jack flanked by two (2) screws surrounded by a speaker grille that uncannily resembles the Apple iPhone 6 as detailed in Apple iPhone 6 and Plus with 128GB Storage and Apple Pay is Biggest iPhone Launch.

The Dual SIM 5.2″ 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution IPS-NEO LCD capacitive touchscreen is protected by a nicely lavished layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The back is also equally impressive, albeit oddly it lacks a fingerprint sensor.

So what’s under the hood of the Huawei P8?

Huawei P8 Specs – Quad-Core goodness with 13 MP and 8MP Camera but small Battery

The Huawei P8 runs on an impressive set of Quad-Core processors as shown:

  • 4 x 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53
  • 4 x 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53)

The processor is housed in a HiSilicon Kirin 930/935 chipset and the graphics is handled by a Mali-T628 MP4 GPU.  The Internal memory configurations differs as follows:

  • 16 Internal memory, 3 GB RAM
  • 64 GB Internal memory, 3 GB RAM

The second SIM slot doubles as the microSD Card slot and can accept 256GB microSD Cards. It’s an all metal chassis and has a bigger display than its predecessor, the Huawei P7. It also comes in more colour options for each Internal memory configurations:

  • Titanium Grey, Mystic Champagne (16 GB model)
  • Carbon Black, Prestige Gold (64 GB model)

This powers a 28mm 13 megapixel Rear-Facing camera, which has an aperture of f/2.0.  The camera sports a dual-LED (dual tone) and has expected features such as autofocus, geo-tagging, touch focus, face/smile detection, panorama and HDR. It also shoots 1080p video at a rate of 30fps.

The 8 Megapixel 26mm front facing camera is more than adequate to take selfies. With an aperture of f/2.4, it does high quality 1080p which the screen is more than capable of displaying.

All of this is powered by a non-removable Li-Po 2680 mAh battery that seems to be the only flaw in an otherwise stellar design, as its way too small.

Huawei P8 – Usage is great but needs fingerprint scanner and a better Battery and Screen

Despite these wonderful specs, I wish it had a bit more!

The screen is not Quad HP, so it’s not up to spec with the other smartphone makers; I’m especially upset with the lack of a fingerprint reader to protect your nude pictures. The display is a bit saturated, especially with the back colour tones.

The Emotion 3.1 US is cleaner looking and has everything on the homescreen; recommend that you use a folder to keep it clean and organized looking. Notifications are in a timeline view and does multi-tasking very well albeit as not as good as Samsung or LG.

The UI is changeable with an option to switch to a simple display that resembles Windows tile view somewhat with support for themes as well as making your pictures into a theme. Interestingly, it also has some knuckle gestures such as using your knuckle to double tap the screen to take a picture and also crop the picture. This appears to be more of a gimmick than a useful feature!
