The Winged Pegasus must be a Good Omen for Huawei! I’ve never felt so glad to see Peggy once more as I did on Tuesday, June 7th 2016. This as the Pegasus Hotel was the location for the Huawei Global ICT Roadshow 2016 as parlayed in Kelroy’s article Jamaica selected for Huawei Global ICT Roadshow 2016.
The ICT Innovation Exhibition 2016, is a three (3) day event slated to take place from Tuesday, June 7th to Thursday, June 9th, 2016 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, New Kingston. The Exhibition, which has the theme ‘Open ROADS for a Better Connected World’, is intended to showcase Huawei’s leading advanced technologies, products, and solutions for the Telecoms and ICT Sectors in the following business areas:
- Telecom Equipment Suppliers
- Enterprise Services for the Government of Jamaica
- Consumer Products
Huawei plans to have twenty (20) technology Products, Services and Technology Solutions on display over the next three (3) days:
- Video Everywhere
- Cloud reforms your business
- Enabling Digital Operation
- Ubiquitous Ultra Mobile Broadband
- Experience-driven Ultra Fixed Broadband
- Huawei Enterprise Business Solution
- Huawei Consumer Device
ICT Innovation Exhibition 2016 will have scheduled leadership talks, presentations and displays, to demonstrate to their potential Jamaican clients in the ICT, Telecommunications and the Jamaican Government how ICT will allow Jamaica to use ICT to foster Growth.
So what new technology did they have in store for Jamaica that was so special that they had to bring the ICT Innovation Exhibition 2016?
ICT Innovation Exhibition 2016 – Ribbon Cutting affair with a sprinkling of Technology
The launch event for the ICT Innovation Exhibition 2016 was not just a ribbon cutting affair. The RSVP Launch event for the ICT Innovation Exhibition 2016 was a literal lookbook straight-out of the who-who in Jamaica. But first, you have to get a special ID to separate the VIP from the Staff.
The approximately 100 guests were treated to a five (5) wall LCD Display of their Products and services, with each wall inside of the Conference Room having five (5) LCD Screens displaying products and services from Huawei. There was also a large Stage with a LCD Backdrop set for the announcement later on in the show.
Still, it did involve some ribbon-cutting as General Manager of Huawei Jamaica, Allen Chenyue, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Jamaica, Dong Xiaojun and Dr. Andrew Wheatley, Minister of Science, Energy and Technology along with Yanique Barrett aka the Curvy Diva of Magnum King and Queens of Dancehall fame did the honours later on in the show.
There were representatives from the Media, Jamaican celebrities as well as officials from the Government of Jamaica and the Private Sector, most notably Dr. Andrew Wheatley, Minister of Science, Energy and Technology.
Interestingly, the space used by Huawei was the same location used by Samsung when they had launched the Samsung Galaxy S7 on Tuesday March 29th 2016 as told beautifully in Samsung Galaxy S7 Launch #TheNextGalaxyJa.
All came to rub shoulders and eat and drink freely as Huawei Management and Engineers mingled with the Jamaican representatives from the Huawei Experience Store.
And yes, Huawei also had their own set of cheerleaders, the Huawei girls, all decked out in dresses with Huawei logo clutching their left breast.
So how does Huawei plan to benefit from this?

For my tech lovin’ reader, I did snap some pics of the Huawei Watch and the International version of the Huawei P9, and the Huawei Mate 8, all now at the Experience Store in Tropical Plaza in Half-Way-Tree, which Nadisha, a representative from Huawei Jamaica, was kind enough to show me.
Clearly this was just a showcase for their products from their other business areas other than Consumer products. In an interview with Huawei’s Account Director, Engelbert Reyes Cabrera, he revealed the true nature of ICT Innovation Exhibition 2016. He pointed out that the Exhibition was meant to demonstrate their Products, Services and Technology Solutions that they had to offer aside from Consumer Electronics products.
By launching Huawei’s ICT Innovation Exhibition 2016 in Jamaica, they hope to make Jamaica the Technology hub for the Caribbean. As it relates to selling unlocked smartphones with their partner Lasco Distributors, Mr. Cabrera pointed out that they’re not in Jamaica to compete with the Telecom Providers. However, as the opportunity arises to market their other products via introduction to their main consumer products, such as the Huawei P9 and their other products, they’ll take advantage of that opportunity.
Huawei’s ICT Innovation Exhibition 2016 not only demonstrates how important the Jamaica Private and Public Sector market is but is also geared at increasing their brand awareness in Jamaica by having their products and services on display.
