How to download Videos from any website without installing software using Savefrom

In the process of blogging about everything from smartphones to Autonomous Robots (ants are my heroes!) I need ever so often to download a video. Unfortunately the St. Andrew Parish Library is very primitive….as in poorly updated Browsers and slow Internet! Cho!

The fastest computers, again are the Research Machines upstairs. Unless you visit CNET a lot and use their Review Videos, you’ll find downloading videos from YouTube next to impossible at the Library, as you can’t install any software on any of their computers. It’s as bad as sending email, for which using a Portable Email Client is a solution as explained in Portable Email Clients for USB Drives makes Sending Email Safe and Mobile.

The best way I’ve found to download YouTube videos and just about any video from any website I need to write my blog articles is …..well, another website. To be specific, it’s not a Web Based app but a savvy video Downloading website called SaveFrom.

To download any YouTube video, I simply place “ss” in front of the word “youtube” in the URL e.g. in the case of the video http://youtube.com/watch?v=x328y2J1DK it becomes http://ssyoutube.com/watch?v=x328y2J1DK. At that point the magic begins to happen as you’re transported to the following webpage to begin the download in a variety of File Formats of your choosing.

You then choose which format you wish to download the video in from the Right and the process starts, with the file being saved in the location of your choosing, depending on your Browser Settings. Alternately there are other ways to download using SaveFrom:

  • Enter the URL-address in the input field at the top of the page then click on the press “Download” button to the right of the input field.

  • Add “savefrom.net/” or “sfrom.net/” before the URL e.g. sfrom.net/http://ssyoutube.com/watch?v=x328y2J1DK
    and press Enter.

The list of website SaveFrom works with is pretty extensive, especially if you’re a fan of free content from Russian TV:

If you end up liking this lightweight downloader of videos, when you get home from the Library you can install it on your computer, as (yes!!) it has a SaveFrom downloadable browser add-on.

Great idea and a saviour in a pinch especially when you need to grab a video real quick and the time’s ticking down real fast on your Computer…..even if you don’t live in Russia.

Daspidanya Dear reader till next time you need to download something real quick!

Sounds interesting, and a good general alternative. I use IDM and the torch browser mainly, but sometimes run into problems and need a back up method. Plus, the least amount of downloading programs, the better!
