Tech tutorials, howtos and walkthroughs

Jamaicans will now be able to access GOJ (Government of Jamaica) websites without having to use up Megabytes or even having a data plan.

So it’s not Just Facebook that’s getting the royal treatment from Digicel Jamaica as I’d pointed out in Free Digicel Facebook Flex and Free Basic is unlimited Data for Smartphone users; it’s also every GOJ website.

How Jamaicans on FLOW and Digicel access GOJ Websites without a Data Plan

This arrangement is possible thanks to negotiation between the Ministry of Science, Technology and Energy and the Telecom Providers FLOW Jamaica and Digicel Jamaica.

This is effectively unlimited Data to visit the ninety five (95) Government websites as listed below:

Minister of Science, Technology and Energy Dr. Andrew Wheatley made this declaration during his presentation on Tuesday June 21st 2016 during the 2016/17 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives.

It’s part of his 10point Information and communications technology (ICT) plan for free access to key online services that will also see the following being implemented.

  • Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Act
  • Data Protection Act
  • Single ICT Regulator

Hopefully they’ll also update these websites and introduce e-commerce platforms to accept Electronic Transactions via Credit and Prepaid Debit Cards such as Scotia VISA Dabit Card as well as mobile money Platforms such as NCB Quisk as I’d predicted in NCB launches Mobile Money using cellphones with ATM withdraw coming.

It would be great to be able to pay for services via a freely accessible website or app for a GOJ Website rather than have to travel with cash only to be robbed when leaving. It’ll also have the added effect of boosting traffic to these rather boring GOJ websites, forcing the Ministry of Science, Technology and Energy to upgrade them to that they are more Smartphone-screen friendly.

This will allow the GOJ to potentially make money from advertising, with Digicel Jamaica and FLOW Jamaica Ads being free of course! Jamaica, this is progress; slow but steady!
