“With the Olympic Games now only days away, we are very excited as our athletes are expected to bring home yet another big medal haul. This App is one of the numerous ways in which we are providing exciting options for customers to enjoy the world’s most anticipated sporting event”
FLOW’s Vice President marketing and television, Carlo Redwood, announcing the launch of the Flow Rio 2016 Extra App
What do you do when you have 1 million customers in your network as in the case with FLOW Jamaica, a milestone they achieve on Friday May 20th 2016 as per my ditty How Flow Jamaica celebrated 1 million customers with a 99 cents FAM Plan?
You give them a free Streaming App of course! FLOW Jamaica, who are the ‘Official Broadcast Partner of Rio 2016 Olympic Games’, launched the Flow Rio 2016 Extra App on Monday August 1st 2016 at 100 Hope Road in St Andrew.

The App will go live on Saturday August 6th 2016, a day after the Rio 2016 Olympics Opening Ceremony on Friday August 5th 2016. This Wi-Fi friendly App is bristling with features such as:
- Uptotheminute statistics
- 24/7 streaming of nonstop Olympic action
- Real time Olympics news highlights
- Video clips helping fans to catch up or relive each moment
- Athletes’ biographies
- Photo galleries to get upcloseandpersonal with the stars
- Interactive medals table so fans can track their country’s ranking
The Flow Rio 2016 Extra App also has Social Media integration to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat allowing fans to post, share, like, tweet and even comment on their favourite performances.
Customers even have the chance to win a trip to the Olympic Games and LED TVs as pointed out by Carlo Redwood, quote: “These also join an Olympic micro site that gives Flow customers information on all things of the Olympics. The company also offered lucky customers a chance to win a trip to the Olympic Games and LED TVs, as well as executed several fan engagement events across the country”.
No work will get done in Jamaica, where there is Free Wi-Fi as we’ll be locked away streaming the Rio 2016 Olympics on our smartphones. Available on the Android Play Store and the Apple iTunes Store, customers will also have a chance to access three (3) exclusive Olympic Channels on 691, 692 and 693 labled as follows:
- Olympic One
- Olympic Two
- Olympic Three
Take a look at these pictures from FLOW Jamaica’s Twitter feed showing the launch as it happens:

So how does this App Work?
Flow Rio 2016 Extra App – Streaming to Caribbean Customers via Wi-Fi
The App is available to all Jamaicans, no Matter what Network you’re on.
So yes, this’ll work on your Digicel smartphone as hinted by FLOW’s vicepresident marketing and television, Carlo Redwood, quote: “The FLOWRio2016Extra App is the final and most major activation that we are delivering to bring the Olympics to life, right in the palm of the customers’ hand”.
However, it’s available in the Caribbean section of the Android Play Store and the Apple iTunes Store and will work in the following specific regions in the Caribbean:
- Anguilla
- Antigua
- Barbados
- BTC
- BVI
- Cayman
- Dominica
- Grenada
- Jamaica
- Montserrat
- St Kitts
- St Lucia
- St Vincent & The Grenadines
- Turks & Caicos
Simply download the App, install and login in with the FLOW ID.
Flow ID is a free, single user account that gives you secure access to Flow apps and services. It’s a lot like Google in the sense that you login with Flow ID once with a single user name and password and then gain access FLOW account services and exclusive, premium apps and content.
To get a FLOW ID, you have to log into the following website:
https://www.flowid.co
Then set your smartphone to Wi-Fi, as this will burn right though even the highest possible Data Plan that you have as described in FLOW Jamaica MiFi helps you use Prepaid Mobile Internet Plan wisely.
The App even has a Desktop and Laptop (Duh! the same thing!) version as follows:
This begs the question; can Digicel customers place this app on their smartphones and stream from the Flow Rio 2016 Extra App?
Flow Rio 2016 Extra App – FLOW App Store may soon be open to Developers
The content on the Flow Rio 2016 Extra App is available to ALL FLOW customers via two categories:
- Premium
- Freemium
Premium customers are basically dedicated FLOW customers who are active users of one or more FLOW products such as:
- FLOW TV
- Landline (Fixed)
- Cable Internet or ADSL (Fixed Broadband)
- Postpaid mobile
- Prepaid mobile
They have access to a content including live streaming of the Rio Olympics 2015 sports events as they happen.
Freemium is for non-FLOW customer (read: Digicel customers) who also have full access to the Flow Rio 2016 Extra App. However, they cannot access any live streaming. FLOW isn’t actively trying to convert Digicel customer to FLOW customers.
But I suspect a lot of Digicel customers with dual-SIM Blu smartphones are topping up that old FLOW SIM just to get live streaming of the Rio Olympics 2015 sports events. Definitely guaranteeing that no work will get done in Corporate Jamaica during Rio Olympics 2016.
So says Carlo Redwood: “…….And by downloading the App to their smart devices, customers will have exclusive access to live and ondemand Olympic content. This is the onthego alternative to the FLOW Sports Olympic daily broadcast and will be available on mobile and desktop services”.
Flow Rio 2016 Extra App – FLOW App Store may soon be open to Developers
I’m personally pleased with this, as it means that their mini App store, which I criticized as being bare of Gaming and Business Apps that work as noted in FLOW Jamaica App Store needs Game and Business App Developers, is finally getting another App.
Hopefully they’ll open up the FLOW App Store to local Jamaicans Developers to make more Jamaican and Caribbean relevant Gaming and Business Apps. This would have a double benefit, allowing App developers to make money from in-App purchases and advertising for FLOW Jamaica and other advertising partners while driving traffic to their website App portal.
Sharing is caring so share this article with your friends, encouraging them to switch to FLOW Jamaica!
