Tech tutorials, howtos and walkthroughs

The digital card game genre has been proving more and more popular lately. Without a doubt, Blizzard’s Hearthstone is the current kingpin but The Elder Scrolls: Legends is the first worthy challenger to the throne.

First announced at E3 in 2015 The Elder Scrolls: Legends is to the Elder Scrolls series what Hearthstone is to Warcraft. Drawing heavily from the rich lore of The Elder Scrolls games it definitely has a lot going for it. However, its the gameplay that matters and after dabbling in the open beta for the last few days I’d say it has a lot going for it in the gameplay department and is quite addictive.

The Soul of The Elder Scrolls

Hearthstone and Magic The Gathering are obvious influences and I’d go as far as to say even Yu-Gi-Oh. All the well-known races of TES are present from the lizard-like Argonians, to the Redguard to the ever-popular Nord. Each race’s “creatures” have special characteristics that support a certain type of play with enough variety to make various interesting combinations. Cards are coloured to represent Willpower, Strength, Endurance, Agility or Intelligencee. The High Elf are expert mages, the Orc are fierce warriors and the Imperials have strength in numbers for example. Then there are the neutral cards and creatures that add need variety to decks and so quite literally the possibilities are quite endless.

Interesting Gameplay mechanics

The solo story campaign was very interesting and I look forward to seeing how more stories will be told using the game’s art style and different gameplay elements. My favourite gameplay mechanic in TESL has got to be the Rune system as well as prophesies. Each player starts with 5 runes and lose runes (and draw cards) as health is lost. Draw a card with a “prophesy” ability when you lose a rune and play that card for free! Turn the tide when losing by destroying a powerful enemy, recovering some health or blocking a lane.

Normal and Shadow Lanes

Speaking of lanes the game board is split into two separate lanes that creatures can be summoned into. The normal lane and a “shadow” lane that cloaks creatures for a turn before they can be attacked by other creatures (but not actions). Actions are basically spells that allow players to cast different effect or attacks that affect the board. The music in TESL is quite good but the artwork and sound can be hit or miss. The GUI seems “unfinished” but I am excited to see what changes will come before the official launch which is imminent.

Worth a trial!

The Elder Scrolls: Legends is of high enough quality to warrant a trial-run, if you are fan of TES lore then this card game is a must play. Try the game at share your thoughts!

  1. Watched a bit of your play through and while graphically it seems well ahead of Hearthstone the game seems a bit too serious and drudgery for me. I’m picky with what draws me in though I guess.

    • Its definitely a lot more serious than the lighthearted Hearthstone. I can see myself enjoying both.
