“The DL1000 smartphone is all about ensuring that even more customers have access to the amazing experience of 4G. So it’s about accessibility, style and affordability. Importantly, with video streaming becoming the fastest-growing phenomenon in mobile, the 5.5 inch HD screen delivers a bigger and better streaming experience for customers – it’s your own TV in the palm of your hands.”

Digicel Group Chief Commercial Officer, John Delves, commenting on the launch of the DL1000

Digicel has let yet another cat…or rather smartphone, out of the bag.

This time it is the DL1000, which made its debut in St. Kitts and Nevis,  St. Lucia and possibly Trinidad and Tobago on Monday, December 14, 2015.

However, I do have some good news; this time I have some specs for the DL1000!

This is now the fourth DL series smartphone revealed by Digicel. Thus far the only one of these phones that has been publicly release in Jamaica is the 5” DL910.

I suspect the DL910 may be made by ZTE, being as the Alcatel smartphones may have been giving Digicel a lot of complaints due to frequent crashes, overheating and poor performance among customers!

This was done during the Digicel ‘Merry Millions’ wheel on Deletion Jamaica program Smile Jamaica on  Friday November 20th 2015 as noted in Digicel DL910 revealed in Merry Millions Promotion.

Worse, Digicel didn’t even have Jamaican Press Release or even advertise the sale of the smartphone in Jamaica, muchless to post a YouTube video to reveal any details about these smartphones or even the DL910.

They’d also revealed the 4.5″ DL810 which I’d mentioned existed when Digicel had revealed the Digicel Appseeker App as per my ditty Appseeker Launched on DL810 and DL1000 and MyDigicel on Apple iTunes Store.

The 4” DL755 was also released, albeit I’ve yet to hear much about this particular DL model. Definitely will have to visit some Digicel Store soon in order to unmask these smartphones in greater detail!

So what are the specs of the DL1000 ? Is it a more advanced DL model or is the name just another designation number?

Alas, I can only reveal what Digicel has let out of the bag in their very limited and tightly controlled Press Release. Fortunately for us, unlike the DL910 smartphone, whose specs are still shrouded in mystery, Digicel chose to reveal some specs for the DL1000.

The DL1000 is a nice looking smartphone with dimensions of 151 x 77.8 x 8.85mm. It sports a  5.5” HD IPS display with a resolution of 720 x 1280 and surprisingly, is available only two (2) colour options:

  • White screen/gold back
  • Black screen/silver back

The 5.5” DL1000 is packin’ a 1.3GHz Quad Core processor that’s running Google Android 5.0 Lollipop, not the latest OS as it’s two 92) steps behind the latest Os, Google Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Still, the 1.3GHz Quad Core processor is given some support with a decent GB RAM and a surprisingly paltry 8GB of Internal storage, suggesting that this may be some sort of entry level smartphone.

The cameras, which are a 13 megapixel rear camera and an 8 megapixel front camera respectively, are at least a step up from the DL900’s 5 Megapixel Camera with Autofocus, LED Flash as noted in Digicel launches DL900 aka Alcatel Pop C7 as Digicel DL750 on Sale for Christmas 2014.

This trip, the DL1000 is loaded with a lot of Digicel’s Bloatware, mainly Apps from their Digicel App world, such as Sportsmax, Loop, Digicel Space, My Digicel, Digicel Top Up and possibly the Digicel Appseeker app for those confused about what’s good on Google Play Store.

Truly this is more evidence that they do indeed have plans to expand their Digicel App World into a full-fledged App Store. As I’ve been predicting, possible one filled with Apps made by local Caribbean Developers via advertising partnerships as argued in Why Digicel More may woo Jamaican Developers with Advertising partnerships.

Digicel hasn’t revealed who the OEM (Original Equiptment) manufacturer is, the price or whether or not the DL1000 and it compadres will be coming to Jamaica. Still, it’s great to know something about an otherwise aesthetically appealing Smartphone so heavily shrouded in mystery for their growing legion of users in the Caribbean to drool over.

For now, it’s not yet in Jamaica, but it’ll at least perfect Digicel Christmas Gift for young people in St. Lucians and St. Kitts and Nevis. Stay tune for more on the DL755, DL810, DL910 and now the DL1000, as the next article I do on these smartphone will be to reveal more detail on their OEM and prices.
