Multimedia

The tv out cable came into play again when I ambitiously tried to replace my DVD player with the N95. I downloaded a few medium quality MP4 files and played them through tv out on my humble 32 inch tv. The video player played 480p videos quite well and the multimedia controls worked as they should, providing a very nice viewing experience. Music also played well through the cable as expected.

The nokia N95s camera is still one of the best available. It combines high resolution stills with decent VGA recording and a decent LED flash to provide an exceptional photo experience, even 3 years into its life.

Other Utilities

A few novelty utilities taking advantage of the N95’s accelerometer were installed and used. These are:

Nokmote: A python utility that uses the accelerometer to emulate keypresses, allowing you to e.g. control a car in game by tilting the phone. Its a bit cumbersome in some games though because of lack of sensitivity and too sudden a movement, lacking a gradual increase in direction that is needed in most games also sours the experience.

Hourglass Simulator: A cool app for those who are obsessed with the ancient hourglass timing mechanism 🙂 . All it does is basically countdown to a minute with an accelerometer controlled virtual hourglass.

Magic level: A level simulation app that allows you to use your phone to detect the angle at which surfaces lie, again curtesy of the accelerometer.

PyPiwo: A rather useless but fun app, simulate drinking a beer, thats all 🙂 .

Verdict

So can the N95 compete with newer smartphone models? Yes it can, just dont go expecting it to work as a touchscreen device. Its functionality is still top of the class, limited only by nokia who never really brought out the fullest in the device. I still regard it as better than the N96 and N86 which both should have upgraded on its functionalities and capabilities. My question is: Will we ever see another N95 from nokia? We just have to wait and see.
