The Apple iPhone 6 launch on Tuesday September 9th 2014 was not the launch of one product or two, but of multiple products as listed below:
- 4.7” Apple iPhone 6
- 5.5” Apple iPhone 6 Plus
- Apple Pay
- Apple Watch
- Apple iOS 8
Already it may prove to be their biggest smartphone launch in Apple’s history. According to reliable sources, Apple asked Foxconn to crank out some 80 million Apple iPhone 6 Plus smartphones. Foxconn has been replacing humans with Robots since July 2014 in a bid to keep for production to keep pace with huge demands.
80% represents more than 40% more Apple iPhone 5S and 5C than produced in all of 2013, setting the stage for the biggest sale of the Apple iPhone in Apple’s 38 year history come December 2014!
The Weekend didn’t disappoint!
Apple’s Record setting Sales Weekend – Love is in the air for the Bigger Apple iPhone 6
First, let’s put up the sales figures for past weekends as comparison:
- 600,000 for the iPhone 4 in June 2010
- 1 million iPhone 4S phones in October 2011
- 2 million iPhone 5 phones in September 2012
- 9 million for the Apple iPhone 5S and 5C in September 2013
Well, prepare to be blown away. Over the weekend starting from when the Apple iPhone 6 went on sale on Friday September 19th 2014 and onwards over the weekend from Saturday September 20th 2014 to Sunday September 21st 2014, Apple sold a total of 10 million Apple iPhone 6 and Apple iPhone 6 Plus!
Apple had already broken the 24 hour pre-order barrier of 4 million smartphones before the pre-order system broke down. So this huge sales number, nearly 1/8 of the total Apple iPhone 6 Apple has allegedly produced is a great start by any measure.
Apple iPhone went on sale around the World on Friday September 12th 2014 in the following Developed countries:
- Hong Kong
- Puerto Rico
- United Kingdom
By Friday September 26th 2014, it’ll be on sale in the following twenty (20) Developed and Developing World countries:
- Isle of Man
- New Zealand
- Saudi Arabia
- United Arab Emirates
So what has Americans and the world at large in awe of the Apple iPhone?
Apple iPhone 6 and Apple iPhone 6 Plus – The Bigger one is actually the Better of the two
The 4.7” Apple iPhone 6 is packing the usual 4.7” IPS Backlit IPS LCD Screen Retina Display that I’d expected. While the screen may have gotten a bit bigger than the Apple iPhone 5S 4.3” screen and jumbo sized with the 5.5” Apple iPhone 6 Plus, the dimensions are svelte at 6.9mm (0.27”) thick and a supermodel waif-ting 129 grams (4.55 ounces).
Finally, 1080p is now the thing and the screen resolution, the usual Retina display, says so boldly. At a resolution of 1,334×750-pixel resolution with a 326ppi (pixels per inch) density, the Apple iPhone 6 can match wits with the best of ‘em!
Few cosmetic changes from the Apple iPhone 5S save for the bigger screen on the Apple iPhone 6 Plus and the power/lock button being moved from the phone’s top edge to its right spine. One handed swiping is still possible with the Apple iPhone 6 Plus – provided you have bigger hands of course!
Both the 5.5” Apple iPhone 6 Plus and the 4.7” Apple iPhone 6 are the same in these regards save for the screen on the Apple iPhone 6 Plus which has a resolution of 1,920×1,080-pixel resolution at 401ppi.
Apple claims results in a 25% faster CPU with 50% faster graphics with the 64-bit A8 Processor. The M8 Co-Processor is tricked out with some new abilities, such as a Barometer to measure pressure and help with local weather forecasting in your neck of the woods as well as a more accurate picture of elevation for those mountain climbing types!
The iSight Camera is still 8 Megapixels as Apple has chose to improve the optics rather than just boost megapixels. It’s still the main attraction of owning an Apple iPhone and as such Apple has made some essential new tweaks that photographers and videographers will love.
To this end, automatic HDR is now the standard and it supports panoramic picture taking with a new Panorama mode. The iSight camera new imaging processor deals with noise better and supports face, blink and smile detection. Finally, Burst Mode with an auto-selection option to choose the best picture has finally landed on the Apple iPhone 6.
All told, this gives the new iSight Camera with its Sapphire Lens an effective resolution of 43 megapixels, making the Apple iPhone 6 the best smartphone camera tested thus far by DxO Labs based on their DxOMark Mobile scores released Tuesday September 23rd 2014.
Video Recording finally supports 1080p HD Video at frame speeds of either 30 or 60fps. Slow-motion is in HD at 120 or 240fps and HDR. And yes, the iSight Camera supports continuous auto-focus is automatic in BOTH modes. The 1.2 Megapixel Front Facing Camera again has HDR is a default option but the resolution is still at 720p HD, which I hope will be bumped up to 1080p in this Selfie-obsessed Generation.
No battery specs, but it might be the same 2000mAh Battery sans wireless Charging, which Apple hasn’t embraced as yet. Still, you get 10 hours over 3G and 4G LTE and 11 hours on Wi-Fi and Video.
The Apple iPhone 6 and Apple iPhone 6 Plus comes back in the same colours from last year we’ve grown to love:
- Space Gray
Apple iPhone 6 Prices –Not yet at LIME Jamaica but I’ll keep asking for y’all
The Apple iPhone comes in the following options and Prices as shown in the Table below. And I must admit, it wasn’t expecting the 128GB version or for them to kill the 8GB version, but that’s what has happened folks!:
If you’re a Jamaican and you have relatives abroad who want to purchase the Apple iPhone 6 or Apple iPhone 6 Plus unlocked, now is a great time to do so, as it’s totally legal to buy and unlock your Apple iPhone. This thanks to President Barack Obama signed the “Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act” (S.517) on Friday August 1st 2014, making smartphone users the world over as well as in the US of A cheer!
Not yet on sale in Jamaica but the latest news is that Telecom Provider LIME plans to start selling the Apple iPhone 6 by January 2014. I’ll be going to Carlton Crescent Headquarters in the New Year on January 2014 to get an invite to their launch of the Apple iPhone. So keep your eyes peeled for any updates on this blog relating to the availability of the Apple iPhone 6 coming to Jamaica!
But what about the Apple Watch, Apple Pay and Apple iOS 8? I’ll be doing separate articles on those as I soak up the Glory in the Eye of the Apple Tiger! The only problem is forsee is Apple literally running out of Apple iPhones!
